Is a dropped ceiling in a kitchen a problem for fire codes generally? Seems like a fire hazard to me unless you had fire resistant tiles.

I would assume that you would need sheet rock above for a fire rating. --38.142.xxx.xxx |

No idea about current code, but my grandmother’s condo in Florida built in the 70’s had a drop ceiling. She used to store her empty pickle jars up the so she could fill them with water to prepare for a hurricane. After she passed we had to get them all down and make sure she hadn’t hidden any cash or jewelry up there. --24.61.xxx.xx |

Where I am at you need to have sheetrock or plaster above it and at least 1 coat of mud and tape over sheetrock and no holes in plaster for fire safety reasons --72.231.xxx.xxx |

As long as there is a fire rated ceiling above the drop ceiling, you should be fine. You will need to have safety chains on any lights that are supported by the ceiling grid. If the building has a sprinkler system you will also need to have sprinkler heads in the false ceiling space. --96.237.xx.xx |
