vikrell or bootz tub (by J [FL]) Posted on: Jun 16, 2019 3:55 PM

I've been researching tubs, and made another thread about them recently on here. I've decided I don't want to use a cast iron tub.

Some people recommended the Vikrell tub. But I want to do a tile wall and I've read things online -- that you can't use tile on it because it has a unique flange on it to fit it's snap on surrounds -- is this true? Can you use tile with this tub.

The other option I've thought of is Bootzcast but I haven't been able to find a lot of information online about this brand. Americast seem to have very mixed reviews.

Thanks.

We've used dozens of the Kohler Sterling Vikrell tubs. Some were in my properties & some were for my GC clients. Mostly we've use one of their wall systems with them. We have also done them using Hardi backer & tile. If you decide to go with tile the framing needs to have shims added so the face of the Hardi, wonder board, cement board, etc is flush with the tubs lip just as you would with any other type of tub. You want the tile to go past the top of the flange until it almost touches the top of the tub. This space along the top of the tub should be caulked not grouted.

You could also pad the framing so the Hardi board, etc extends down to within a 1/2" or less for the top of the tub. --96.237.xx.xx

Thanks Steve!

Have you had any issues with the Vikrell tubs cracking? There are some complaints online about this and that was my other concern.

We first started using them about 15 years ago & I'm not aware of any issues with them except for a couple of cigarette burns.

As with any not cast iron tub it's very important to make sure the tub base is properly supported. I suggest that you test fit the tub then put either spray foam of light weight gypsum under it. My preferred method is to use low expansion spray foam under it. We use 1-2 cans of foam & have someone stand in the tub for a few minutes while the foam sets up. --96.237.xx.xx

OK thanks again...I was planning to obtain the tub myself and then pay someone else to put it in (plumber). --72.188.xx.xxx

My guess is the cracking was to poor installation. Uneven floor. And they did not shim if needed.

We now install with a mortar bed. Just because it is quick and easy and adds extra protection. And it does not compress and stay that way like spray foam.

The first ones we did about 20 years ago we did not do the mortar bed. And they are still holding up fine.

Been lucky and not had any cigarette burn yet.

I've also used sterling vikrell tubs exclusively on the last 8-10 rehabs I've done. Never used the surrounds, always hardi backer and tile. Oldest one is about 8 years old and still looks great. I also use the low expanding foam under them for a firm base. As Steve mentioned, you do need to consider spacing for the lip, vikrell is thicker than cast or steel. In most cases the thicker concrete based hardi backer will provide enough clearance but in a couple of cases I mounted strips of 1/4 in plywood to the studs before I put up the backer boards. --50.26.xx.xxx

Vikrell can only be cleaned with nonabrasive cleanser. Do you trust your tenants to clean them properly?

Bootzcast: read the reviews at HD. Some of them seem to have significant issues with rusting due to thin/poorly applied porcelain. --204.210.xxx.xxx

Thanks Robin. What kind of tubs do you use?

I like some features of the Vikrell but these Sterling tubs all seem to be at least 16.25 inches in height or higher. That would mean having to change the wall plumbing (shorten it, move it up) so that there is at least a 4 inch distance between the rim of the tub and the tub spout.

Really the Americast fits all the dimensions I want, and the price point, but I read very mixed reviews about Americast online. The other option is the Kohler Villager, but that's 300 lbs, I'd have to pay to have that delivered and the plumbers would probably charge extra for installing a cast iron too.

J, it's not a big deal to just move the tub spout up. In fact you don't even have to shut off the water supplies. Even if you decided to also move up the mixing valve, you've already opened the wall. --96.237.xx.xx
