The homeless problem finally came around to my rental last week. I had planted an evergreen flowering magnolia tree 40 years ago in my parents front yard when I was in college . I allowed the branches to grow out of the tree all the way down to the ground to provide privacy from the street traffic that backs up from the stop light in front of our home. That home is now turn into the rental my brother and I own since the parents have passed away.

Our tenant called last week scared saying when she came home and walked past the tree she heard someone snoring from under the tree. She saw a man sleeping under out magnolia tree in the heavy debris of leaves.

My brother has been up there for several days now cutting the entire tree down to make sure that doesn't happen again. I hate to loose the tree but, it was way over grown and makes such a mess of leaves to constantly clean up. --74.236.xxx.xxx

Seriously??? Save the beautiful Magnolia and just get rid of the trespasser. If the tree needed trimming, trim it...what a waste. --24.20.xxx.xxx

How charming! Sounds beautiful. Not sure your brother should have cut it down.

I suppose now the traffic light is visible. Shouldn't tenant have called the police? --99.203.xx.xx

Why would you cut it down, just trim it up. One homeless person and you cut the tree down sounds way too drastic to me. The tenant should have called the police. --108.4.xxx.xx

I don't blame your brother at all,get rid of the tree and hopefully the bum as well.If homeless are starting to move in it may be time to sell.I would not want to deal with my childhood home as a rental,my parents are still there and I couldn't imagine a tenant wrecking something and feeling like that is not how my parents would have treated the place --72.231.xxx.xxx

we don't have a lot of magnolias here so I'd also have wanted to save it - I'd have trimmed it so the trunk was clear 10' up - hobo or not. I'd guess this was a one time snooze fest. --72.70.xxx.xx

My childhood home is one of my rentals. My parents bought it in 1957. After a couple of years as a rental, it lost all sentimental value. I will be taking out a silver maple that my dad planted way too close to the house 50 years ago. --107.141.xx.xxx

DH was in San Antonio a few years ago for a conference. He's a member of an online community, and there was a meetup scheduled at a bar not too far from his hotel. So he thought he'd get some exercise instead of driving such a short distance, after being cooped up all day. He had to walk past some construction, but it wasn't too bad. On his way back, it's now nighttime... and he's walking past these trees that line the street... and he realizes the trees are have people inside them, and they're watching him...

He got back to his hotel very quickly after that. --107.77.xxx.xxx

Don't cut it, go to a stable and ask for a load of horse manure. They're more than happy to get rid of it. Pile it under the trees that are ripe for napping. No one's curling up under that tree after that. Plus it's good for the tree. --108.69.xxx.xxx

In my area they usually live in a wooded area that's near a 7-11 or McDonalds or some other business. --72.188.xx.xxx
