Thought I’d share cause this is a first for me, drove up to our vacation home on Balch Lake in ME, my wife was already up there so I was driving up with my 8 year old daughter. Came around a corner on a very dark dirt road, saw something black, before I could stop I hit a very large black bear. Did quite a bit of damage to my truck, Bear limped off into the woods. First Bear I’ve seen up here in 20 years of coming up, seen Bear sign while out hunting, but never a live Bear. Shame I hit it, hopefully it’s just sore and it didn’t get hurt too bad. --72.224.xxx.xxx

we live out in the country and have a resident bear, thankfully all our neighbors keep trash cans locked up,so the bear just passes through, but stays pretty local. I actually think he eats pretty well from the dumpsters at the airport, which is close to where we live --67.143.xxx.xxx

Do you know the name of the area or town where this happened?? You might want to let game wardens or whatever you call them up there because an injured bear could cause problems for people if it can't get enough food. --173.61.xxx.xx

I didn't relocate my bear. I chained the dumpster to the ground and the door shut and drenched it with ammonia. (Google search recommendation)

Game commission said that if they baited to trap the bear that there's no guarantee they would catch it and if they did, it may not even be the right bear.

They said that as long as there is a food source they will continue to come around. And the best bet would be to secure it as good as possible.

I don't want them in my dumpsters, but I do find them to be amazing creatures.

I grew up in a very small town in NEPA that boarders 50,000+ acres of state game lands. So I spent a lot of time in the woods. I still do.

When I was 15, my friend and I were riding our bikes and saw a bear on the edge of the road. I hop off my bike and took off after the bear the bear took off running. My friend was yelling at me asking me what I was thinking. Looking back now, I don't know what I was thinking.

It's an interesting experience when you're walking through the woods on the logging road or something and go around the corner and come pretty close to a bear and you kind of stare at it not expecting it to be there and he looks back at you wondering what you're doing there as well! That can be a surreal form of checkmate.

Most of the time though the Bears takeoff running. I have yet to encounter a sow with Cubs while hiking and I hope I don't. I've seen them with cubs, but never very close.

Last fall, I was putting on a deer Drive for my cousin and my uncle. It was a very small patch of very thick young growth trees and my cousin and uncle were on opposite corners of this patch of ground and I was driving (walking) diagonal between the two of them to see if I could push out deer. I didn't have my rifle, because I was tagged out at the time and when I was done driving, my uncle asked me if I saw the bear. I said no. He said Yep, about the time you got in the middle of that patch, he came running about 10 feet from me. So that would've been an experience as well. I never saw him in such a tiny little patch of woods.

Last year, I had a bear take a big heavy bag of garbage right out of the back of my pick up truck and carry it off into the woods next to my house. This had to be a big bear, because the bedrail of my pick up truck is probably 4 to 4 1/2 feet high. And the bag was really heavy, but there was nothing in it that would eat. Only junky kids toys. So they must even be attracted to the smell of the garbage bags at this point and associate that With food. I couldn't believe it picked it right up out of the back of my truck. --50.107.xxx.xx

I agree with AllyM and that you can call animal control services of the area in which you were. How awful. Being pro-active can help the bear and the neighbors in the area. --67.170.xxx.xxx

NE, if only you could get them to clean the toys out of the units. Without ripping out walls...

Heard a story of someone who once had a bear get in their open garage. Homeowner called who they thought was the correct person. Was told to close garage door, and game warden would be over to remove bear.

Yes, their insurance covered the damages when the bear created his own door through the back of the garage!

JKJ, glad you weren’t injured. I hope the game warden can find the bear. --172.56.xx.xxx

Steve, I did see the news of the bear in Arlington, AllyM, my wife called the Game Wardens, they said not much they can do, they’d have a warden check the area, but it was good to call so they know if they get a bear call in that area it may be the 1 I hit (an injured bear is a dangerous bear.) I went back in the morning and checked the surrounding woods in the direction it went, I found where it might have bedded down and some scat, but no bear or blood. So it appears it’s not to badly injured. --72.224.xxx.xxx

We drove through Yellowstone park yesterday. Saw three grizzly bears and two "bear jams!" (A bear jam is when all the stupid tourists see a bear and stop on the highway to take pictures... like 40 cars!)

We came around one turn in the road to find a bison standing right next to the pavement. Could have reached out and touched him from the passenger side. He just stood there (thankfully).

And an elderly couple in a car right in front of us hit a deer outside the park. Wrecked the car, killed the deer, but the couple was OK. I felt so bad for them on their vacation to have to deal with that. If I lived up in these areas I'd have one of those big steel bumpers with the brush guards.

PS - for those familiar with Yellowstone or planning a summer vacation - there is so much snow that Yellowstone Lake is still frozen about 1/4 mile out in places and they just opened the "tower road" on Friday. There's about 3 plus feet of snow by the roads above 7,000 ft.

Also in Glacier Park - the "Going to the Sun" road won't be open until June 22 at the earliest! We were in East Glacier last week, there's an easy 15 feet plus of snow on the high peaks, but the valleys are clear, and the rivers full!

Wow, LTD(AZ) - they must have been clobbered with snow. The only time I was at either park was in 2005. Yellowstone was during the last week of July, and there was zero snow or ice. Glacier was the first week of August, and there was still snow on the Hidden Lake hike from the Logan Pass visitor center, but not much (my kids had a lovely time beaning each other with snowballs in August!). I just found a video of snow being removed from the GTTSR - blimey! --71.175.xxx.xx
