Have someone coming by to see a room this weekend who works for a local law firm. I happen to know one of the partners in this firm which makes it easy to check references. Guy makes 18K a year and doesn't have a vehicle. He wants to move to the rooming house to be closer to work. It's a 20 minute walk from the rooming house to the job or a seven minute bus ride. He looks like he might be a good candidate for a long term stay as long as he keeps his job.

I think I would need more information. The salary mentioned qualifies him for a room that rents for $500 month and no more. At this point, he should not have any debts of significance. Then, how is his credit? I would want to verify that and his background check is clear and check his previous landlord, consider an in-home visit if practical. --24.130.xxx.xx

G,

Do as you like.

For me it’s a hard no.

At the first sign of trouble the entire law firm will step in to crush you.

Been there. Never again.

I rented to one of the clerks of our own attorney's office (several lawyers.) I figured it would be a conflict of interest for them to represent her in any case against me.

(It was never an issue and she is still a FB friend of our biz page. She's a mature woman who has been gone for years.

I wrote a letter of reference for her to rent another apartment in another town when she left.) --184.188.xxx.xx

I rented an apartment to a "Law Clerk" working for a lawyer. After 7 years of a perfect tenancy, he finally took and passed the "Bar" exam becoming a lawyer. Now that he was a "professional" no good for nothing lawyer, he stopped paying the rent and reporting me to "Housing". It took me months to finally evict him. I left some very negative feedback on a review page for the law firm about this employee. Since the posting was accurate, the firm had to let him go..... --47.156.xx.xx

What sort of law firm? I had a lawyer as tenant and he was a very good tenant, but he was the will and document preparing type of lawyer, not an ambulance chaser or a litigator.

Law firms tend to be specialized. --98.146.xxx.xxx

GKARL, I am trying to remember if you said before you did not rent to lawyers. A lot cheaper not to own a car. I wonder if it is by choice. --73.120.xx.xxx

I agree with Brad, renting to lawyers is just asking for trouble. They have infinite capacity to sue, disrupt and harass you and your business. Don't do it. Heaven help you if there is a slip and fall. --70.30.xx.xxx

In my experience lawyers are fine they tend to value their time. Now law clerks are a different matter, a lot of them are attorney wannabes.

I sold a house to a law clerk who promptly sued me after it closed. The only time I have ever been sued by anyone. So since they are not a protected class I will no longer do business with law clerks. --24.45.xxx.xx

A friend of my Dad sold a vacation cabin to two lesbian law students near San Francisco 20 years ago for $10k since he was retiring due to health issues. They stopped paying and he had to jump through a variety of lawsuits to get rid of them. PITA situation for an old sick Navy man who they tried to cheat over a $10K house. They are probably judges now. --174.65.xx.xxx

Just like in-laws, you are renting to the clerk's "extended family" of experienced lawyers.

Sure some work out fine but it's not worth the risk. It only takes ONCE to ruin your business.
