I did a search of this subject and it's sort of been discussed before, but in that case a tenant wanted to add a hoop.

I have an existing basketball hoop by the side of the driveway, on a freestanding pole. It was there when I bought the house. The tenants' kids who've I had at this place in the past have not been of the age to use this hoop (small children).

Could this be a potential problem having this here? Noise complaints, ball damaging neighbor's car? Would you leave it in place or get rid of it? Thanks.

Another potential problems...

- Having a hoop makes your rental a hangout spot.

- Potential damage to gutters and roof when they throw the ball on the roof and let it bounce down.

- Another thing to maintain and another way to be sued.

I'd get rid of everything. Could you use the pole for satellite mounts? --108.69.xxx.xxx

One of my places had a hoop on a freestanding pole that was there when I bought it.

The people who have rented it have been single ladies, lady couples, parents with young children.

In the seven years we've owned it-- I don't think anyone's ever dribbled a basketball or shot a hoop.

When I've had vacancies, the hoop hasn't attracted any notice from people with teenage boys. The young dads haven't mentioned a word about it. The people who are interested in the house are interested in it because it's a 3/1.5, which is almost as good as a 3/2, which is hard to come by as a rental in this market.

I'd leave it alone and not worry about it. --96.46.xxx.xx

I had one at my rental and the tenants requested I take it down for same reasons LLOTF said. --73.120.xx.xxx

I would get rid of it. Those can attract a much older group who will play in the middle of the night and shoot you if you complain. Had one across from my home. Found out that the users were talking about stealing my car as I drove into my driveway. --173.61.xxx.xx

J,

I see it as an amenity. Who cares if they don't use it. SOMEONE will love your home because it has a hoop!

In Indiana it would not be a house without one and be a CRIME to remove it :)

In one of my larger buildings I installed a basketball hoop for my tenants. A short time later everyone on the street and all of my tenants school mates were using my hoop WITHOUT parent supervision.

Due to a potential liability issue AND these kids eating ice cream and candy and dropping the wrappers all over my property, I had to remove the basketball hoop and other games put there just for my tenants kids -- all 40 of them. Now one one is allowed to play on the property UNLESS a adult tenant is there to take responsibility and clean up afterwards. --47.156.xx.xx

If you want it gone find a boy scout troop who will clean out shrubbery or somesuch task and trade it away, everybody is happy. --76.188.xxx.xx

I don't allow them along with swing sets, swimming pools and fire pits. Too much of a chance for something to get broken. --38.142.xxx.xxx
