Getting ready to redo a kitchen and I'd like to find a backlash

with a wow factor. I've seen a lot of them and only a few spoke to me, but it's been awhile and I don't remember the one's that did. --75.187.xx.xx

Steve,

Here is what a high priced interior designer taught me:

People do not see the countertop when they walk in, they see the backsplash.

The countertop should be a neutral design, not too flashy or striking. Greys on white are her favorite.

Use GLASS TILES ONLY on the backsplash either plain white (ceramic subway tiles or octagons are OK) , OR make it a feature for some punch.

Lowes still pushes outdated browns. Blah!

I use the grey/silver/black mixed glass tiles in thin strips so it coordinates with my silver sink, faucet, and stainless appliances. ALWAYS gets a wow. The ladies always touch it.

We also do just a band of backsplash not the entire wall.

Tip: spring for a strip of undercabinet LED ribbon to really make them shine. We wire them into a motion sensor outlet.

Warning: the raw stone patterns look really cool in the store but your buyers see "How could I ever keep this clean?" and turn away.

In my homes I use the same material as the counter tops. Tile, Quartz or Granite. But in my apartments I sometimes put a row of 6 inch tile and then put high end wall paper above the tile for the WOW factor. I just got 4 rolls of a colored wall paper that looks like glass tile and it pill and stick from Home Depot on sale. --47.156.xx.xx

If you used a laminate countertop with a glass tile backsplash (in a rental), would tile just make the laminate look cheap? --72.188.xxx.xxx

Is this for a rental? Resale? Your own home?

For a rental you want something with a really smooth slick surface. Tenants will splash food onto it, so you want something that is really easy to clean. Cover a large area surrounding the stove for easy cleaning.

I would not use that tumbled stone which looks nice but would be impossible to clean spaghetti sauce or splattered grease off of. --98.146.xxx.xxx

Brad 20,000, I like the idea of wiring the LED strips into a motion outlet, my wife has been asking for under cabinet lighting but I’ve resisted because I didn’t want it left on all the time (my wife and kids would never shut it off, the space station probably sees my house at night as is). I might just go to Lowe’s and pick up the stuff and put it in for mother’s day. --71.248.xxx.xxx

Backsplash getting a WOW isn't always positive. I would give that a WOW to all the "different" things you all have described, but it wouldn't be because I liked it. I might be thinking "whose bad taste is that?" Behind my stove I use a purchased silver metal piece which is from the hardware store sold as a backsplash. it's very cleanable. No ridges. No grout. None of my rentals have a backsplash but there is washable paint on there and everyone seems to keep it clean. The back of the stoves seem to be high enough to keep most of the splatter on the stove. At the home I live in now there is flat beige stuff glued on, formica. If you can still get that, it is fantastic. It was done in about 1960 and still looks great and extremely easy to clean. As a female who likes to cook, I prefer plain flat and easy clean surfaces not glitz and glamour in the kitchen. --173.61.xxx.xx

In my c class rentals, I buy a sheet of the same style laminate as the counter. You can buy it in different lengths and widths. I cut and mastic, or trowel liquid nail paneling adhesive it to the wall. It is Cheap, quick to install, and very easy to clean. --98.253.xxx.xxx

Don - I've thought of doing this also. Do you mount the SS to hardboard or something and seam the edges or do you just butt the edges? What do you do at the ends? --73.106.xxx.xxx

You can get a big enough piece so that one piece covers the whole wall for many kitchens. If not, there are pieces that cover the joint. The ends I just leave. I go to a commercial kitchen supply house or sheet metal fabricator to get it. I attach it right to the drywall. Can use adhesive or st.steel screws with grommets. --73.141.xxx.xx
