SQUIRRELS! AAAAUGH!! (by DJ [VA]) Posted on: Apr 23, 2019 7:38 AM
Message:

They are driving me nuts! (yeah, that's a short drive : )

Squirrels in the attic of the rooming house. Apparently a whole group of them, according to a second floor roomer. Have tried closing their hole, sprayed O.C. spray near the hole - they chewed a new one on the other side of the house. Right through the aluminum flashing. Put out some rat poison in attic - cuz I had some handy - they are pretty much just furry rats, right? But it may not be a flavor they like.

It's a nice, shady, treed lot. Trap & release seems futile? There are more in the neighborhood.

I need ideas, please - mothballs? Don't want to choke out the residents, too.

I thought steel over the hole - but they just chew a new one. Can't very well cover the entire fascia with steel.

Will they chew through PT wood?

BTW: It's a very restricted attic space - different, low roof lines, 2 separate attic areas, and some areas you could really only get to if the roof was off. NOT a nice, big open space where you can get to everything.

I'm pulling my hair out here, spinning my wheels (and I don't want to be gray AND bald!) Gotta keeps sense of humor, but really.....

HELP!

Good luck! I've been dealing with them for over a year and can tell get rid of them. No known poison on the market. Maybe some antifreeze in a bowl in the attic. I keep rat traps set and have got 1-2. We've shot some with BB guns. Closed there entrances, installed exit only doors, etc.

They make new holes

You just have to kill them. --174.201.xx.xxx

After closing its entrance, I had a squirrel bore a hole through the shingles and plywood to regain entry. Suggest you trim trees way back from roof, but they will still come in on wires. I like the strobe light idea. Way smarter than climbing into the attic with a long pole. --107.141.xx.xxx

I wish you luck. I have a family member dealing with the same issue. It's become a game between this person and their FB profile. They name them all starting with A and moving through the alphabet. Rinse and repeat. I think it's 70+ in caught squirrels so far.

Best thing I can tell you is continue looking for new entrance places and close them off. Live trap and release or do whatever. Just take them far away to release so they don't come back.

If there is a poison they will eat, just be aware if they die in the house it will stink. --72.209.xxx.xxx

My thinking is once they have gotten used to living in attic spaces, they will try to get in where ever they are relocated . So, sadly, I too think they need to be destroyed, rather than relocated. I am an animal lover, but anything that wants to come in, chew on wires, and burn the house down, nope.

Rat poison does work on them . I stored a box of rat bait in the storage garage I use. Squirrels took up residence in the garage, made a nest in my box of furnace filters, tore open the rat poison box., ate a bunch, and died in the furnace filter box. At least they were nicely contained in the box. Easy disposal.

Definitely trim tree branches back, and that strobe light sounds like a good idea. My husband is an expert shot with his BB gun, but he doesn’t want to come in to the city and plink any there. Risking way too much if anyone sees a guy with a weapon. But, if I ever catch any in a live trap, I would bring them home so he could plink them at home. To me, an expert marksman is more humane than poison, just it’s not always available.

When we moved into our own home, there were many ground squirrels in the area. Then we noticed a light flickering. Hubs went in attic to investigate. Squirrel nest and freshly chewed wires. Nope, cute little fellas. You were cute until you tried to burn the house down. --70.92.xxx.xxx

Had to replace a transformer at one of mine earlier this spring because of squirrels.

I'm about to replace some damaged soffits at my house soon... more squirrels!

I guess you can find anything online.

My biggest concern is exactly what some of you have said - chewing on wires.

Our advice is multi-pronged approach:

Trim trees

Strobe lights

Cat

Rat poison

But, don’t do cat AND rat poison. Either/ or.

Practice your sniper skills with BB gun ( not available in all areas)

Live trap and plink

And be prepared for a long battle. --172.58.xxx.xx

I had Raccoons, Opossums and Squirrels break into my air vents in an apartment complex to access the attic and crawl spaces. So instead of the light gauge 1/4 inch galvanized mesh, I used thick gauge stainless steel mesh with reinforcement grids.

The most active location that they kept on attaching I added a 25,000 volt shocker. That sent them flying and they moved to a new address.. --47.156.xx.xx

Be careful using poison, I had a situation where a neighbor had squirrels, so the neighbor was tossing poison in the attic to kill them. But the squirrels were smart little ba$tard$s and were just taking the poison out of the attic and leaving it in the neighbors yards including mine. My dogs got a hold of it and I had to bring both of them to the vet for Vitamin K injections and plasma transfusions. So word of caution, if you poison make sure it’s only targeting the animal you want targeted. --71.248.xxx.xxx

To stop them buy two havahart squirrel traps. Get the larger ones. Put them in strategic places. On the ground will do, but careful no animal lover sees them or they'll be gone. Keep trapping and drowning the squirrels until the attic sounds go away completely. Innocence bystanders will be killed but there's no other solution. And be careful when you transport the traps that they are fully closed. People will look at you funny when you open the gate of your station wagon and a squirrel comes flying out. And once you trap the squirrel, cover the trap with a towel to calm the squirrel. --100.1.xxx.xxx

I agree with BillW, you got to kill them or they will keep coming back. Then block up all the access points. If the thought of drowning them isn’t for you, you can also trap em, then put the trap in a large plastic tote from like Lowe’s, then put in a chunk of dry ice in some water and put the lid on the tote. They will just fall asleep and die, no struggling. --71.248.xxx.xxx

Unfortunately if they have babies there is no way to get them out till they brood matures. Any attempt to keep them from nest will backfire. Best option is trapping outdoors.

Squirrels run races around my house the old asphalt siding provides an easy grip. So far there are enough empty houses to keep them at bay. --24.194.xx.xx

Put pans of Ammonia around in the attic, shove ammonia soaked rags in holes and tight places. Refresh the supply every few days. Eventually they will give up and leave. I had raccoons in the chimney above the fireplace. We put a pan of Ammonia in the fireplace so that the fumes would go up the chimney. There was a lot of sneezing and realized it was a nest of baby raccoons. We dropped a rope (rags) down the chimney and in a couple of days the family climbed out and left. --68.32.xxx.xxx

I read that a strobe light will make them leave. Make sure it reaches all parts of the attic. I have the same trouble with one of my homes. A trap got one of them out but the other one must have seen what happened and won't go in the second trap. I am still waiting for the tree guy to take down the access tree. The tenant hears noise right over her bedroom. She has been patient. It has been months of this. I looked at strobes but her brother has brain issues and I am afraid to put one in the attic on the chance he would go up there. He has seizures from strobes. --173.61.xxx.xx
