Seeing a post recently about hot water supply tank losing pressure and the WAGS valve on inlet side reminds me of the new fitting the Gas company is putting on some older homes -- between the gas meter and where gas enters the home. If, like the water heater one, it senses high flow an internal valve starts to slide closed-- closing off like a bypass valve. Sometimes when the heat and water heater come on the same time the valve trips and pilot lights go out.

This type valve has been used in Aviation to shut off hydraulic fluid on broken lines so the system doesn't drain dry.

As a plumbing contractor I've used many types of automatic water and or gas shut-off valves. The WAGS, older models, have a 1 time use and can not be reset. No good in my book.

Also many water heater auto-shut-off valves only shut off the water and not the gas. I like to install a dual auto shut-off valve that cuts off the water to the water heater and the gas supply to the water heater also.

Watts Water Detector Shut-off, turns off the water and power (to the gas valve). Model # 1 LFWDS-SP-L (from memory). --47.156.xx.xx

WAGS Valve model # WAGS7200-5G shut off both water and gas too, but you are correct they are a 1 time use. A water soluble fiber element holds back a spring loaded valve. --71.248.xxx.xxx

I've had a water heater that the T & P valves trips momentarily and then trips the WAGS valve. This cost to replace the valve, time and labor makes it a must to install a reset able valve. --47.156.xx.xx

RobertJ, good point, I’ve never had 1 fail from leak or otherwise but I’m definitely going to look into the model you suggested if I need to replace any existing 1’s I have. Like you said, I like that it can be reset, unlike the WAGS --174.192.xx.xxx

I just had plumbers redo some gas lines in one of my houses. I bought a new gas stove and the supply line kit at Lowes and had them hook it up. Plumber was showing me the thread to compression fitting that came with the kit, it was the cutoff/regulator type that closes off the gas if there is 0 pressure on the stove side. I guess I'm showing my age, I didn't know those existed. --50.26.xx.xxx
