A friend of mine is a stained glass artist and had gone to see its famous glass. I'm happy they were able to have the opportunity. It's a tremendous loss, whether you look at it as a symbol of art, architecture, culture, or religion. I'm grateful to hear a lot of the statues/art/relics had been removed so that they wouldn't get damaged during the renovation, so they didn't get lost in the fire, and I'm happy the side towers seem to be holding.
Holy Thursday/Good Friday are later this week. You have to have them before you get your Easter Sunday. I hope Paris is able to do something magnificent... not just with the externals, but an internal transformation as well. --166.137.xxx.xxx |

ISIS threatened to take it down last year, but then Trump took them down. We will put it back but this time with steel structure inside and maybe sprinklers. Then people four hundred years from now will admire us as they do the craftsmen who put it up in the 1600s. We will get the finest artist to recreate the paintings. I just can't believe how long it took them to get water on the fire, or why there were not fire bucket choppers available. Even our little city in the middle of nowhere has fire buckets for our life flite choppers. New report - 2 fires started at the same time in two different locations in Notre Dame. "Michel Picaud, from the Friends of Notre Dame organization responsible for the renovation efforts at the cathedral, told NBC News that, to his knowledge, the church's organ and stained glass windows were not damaged. Normally, our places aren't UNESCO sites that draw about 13 million visitors per year, or are of historical, religious, artistic, and cultural significance.
But they don't have to be. But some of us have stood by and watched our real estate burn and there was nothing we could do about it... landlords are naturally interested in buildings, and when someone loses a structure, it's normal feel the loss. --96.46.xxx.xx |

It's a THING and it was OLD and made of WOOD-- did anyone really think or did they think this wouldn't happen eventually?
My question is how did it survive 800 years not getting hit by lightening?
No one was killed- it will be rebuilt and if an accident-- they'll ban workers who smoke on the job-- if arson-- they'll figure that out too.

French president Macron today declared the cathedral will be completely rebuilt within 5 years. Small wonder here ... after all, it is the third largest tourist attraction in Paris, after the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triumphe. A piece of trivia-- the French government confiscated all churches built before 1905, which includes Notre Dame. They let the Archdiocese of Paris use it for free, in exchange for the Archdiocese being responsible for upkeep of the property and employee paychecks.
It wasn't the first time France had seized property. When their government was bankrupt in 1790 (during the French Revolution), they created a monetary system (Assignates) that were backed by the value of confiscated church lands/property. It worked for a while, but eventually, economic mismanagement led to the collapse of the First Republic, and the rise of Napoleon.
There are places across the world where private property is being confiscated by the State and mismanaged-- South Africa and Venezuela are two places that come first to mind! --but it's an element of history that constantly repeats.
Back in the days of the French Revolution (1793), Notre Dame was dedicated to the Goddess Reason, along with a bunch of other prominent cathedrals and churches. (Chartes, Reims, etc.) Now that it's in need of serious renovation, there are a lot of calls for it being re-imagined and abandoning its churchy roots.
The Summer Olympics will be in Paris in 2024, so there's an enormous push to get the project tidied up before that deadline. But it will be interesting to watch what kind of path they end up taking in order to meet that looming deadline... --96.46.xxx.xx |
