Suggestions to get rid of strong odor - not sure where it is, carpet, bathroom, etc. This is an older home.

I was going to post about a miracle product that got rid of stench in carpet one of my units from tenant who lived there and didn't shower. It smelled like a homeless person. I had used ammonia 2x, odor ban, bleach and carpet machine and rented the ozone machine. The ozone machine did the trick til the weather warmed up and then the smell came back, not as strong but bad enough. BTW the ozone machine took care of the smoke/ stench in a different rental.

While searching for a carpet cleaner I came across "natures miracle" at Lowes. Products have great reviews, but people hate that they added scent to them. I looked up the company and they sell stronger versions at Petco. At Petco they asked me if I was dealing w/ dog or cat odor, and that the cat focused product is stronger. I used the advanced cat stain and odor eliminator in the red jug. It worked great. After 1 week all I have is a medium scented apt. I opened the windows today and aired it out some.

As a person with 6 cats -- I agree with David. Nature's Miracle that is specifically made for cat urine is the best answer, IMO. That is if you can find the spots, of course.

If it is just "all over the place", then be ready to start ripping up carpet, pad, and likely flooring...

Our elderly, inherited tenant recently passed away and we have been doing a major rehab on his apartment. He had a cat, and kept the litter box in the second bedroom's closet.

We ripped out carpet, sprayed multiple times with a product called Urine Destroyer, sealed the subfloor with Kilz, completely painted, and then covered with new Allure. I thought the odor problem was solved.

And then the sun came out. The smell came back.

Ditch the carpet if you still have this outdated floor covering, while removing it take a small piece to the sink where you can demonstrate the ability to hold liquid creating a wall to wall stain and stink magnet, YUK. Nearly everyone has allergies so having smooth floors fixes much of this. The ozone generator is helpful, look on ebay.

Melalueca alternifolia, also known as Tea Tree Oil helps with odors as well. To me, Odor Xit smells like melalueca, and Odor Xit gives me the same contact dermatitis rash that I get from Melalueca. Not a bad rash if I don't use it too often, so I put up with it occasionally when needed.

Ozone generator also works, but, often with a lessor reoccurance of smells later, as Small Potatoes mentioned. I set mine on a timer when doing a rehab, so it runs for about an hour after I leave each day, then shuts back off and has time to dissipate before I return. Make sure the extension cord is plugged in nearest your entry/exit door, in case a power outage screws up the timer. Ozone isn't good to breathe, and some persons have a negative reaction (I haven't so far.)
