Moby they are everywhere. Cheap to buy, head scratching to repair. URI, a door installation contractor for a big box store, said ‘ Is problem for you, not problem for me’ . His company won’t touch them.
I’m working on making my own door jambs today. Cannot use a prehung door, without almost as much trouble, so I’ve decided to just learn how to make door jambs from 1x4 lumber.
Oh, if your son has a 30” doorway between kitchen and living room, the framing should already be in place to open that up to about 44” . At least one of mine was, I opened the wall to reframe the opening, and voila! Already there. I came across a sales brochure online that described how the homeowner could buy the house with traditional doorways or an ‘open concept’. National used that term in the early 1950s! But, all they meant was the wider doorway, according to further research. --70.92.xxx.xxx |

His has a 12' opening from the kitchen/dining to the living room. Fairly open. I know the studs thru out are thin like 2x3's. Makes window replacement fun.
I remember getting a job offer out of T&D school from the furnace factory next door to their plant. They built for National, can't remember the name now. My brother worked for them much later at different location after National was defunt. --68.60.xxx.xx |

12’ wide, that’s nice!
Door framing is unique. Door jamb, then a 1x3” next to that, nearest stud several inches away. Last exterior door we replaced, I cut the wall doors back so the carpenter could get the 2x3” studs on either side. I just slipped a piece of trim in to cover where the wallboard was cut out. Painted it up. Caulk and paint are my best friends.
But, overall, these little houses have held up well enough, they sure housed a lot of people quickly and inexpensively. Good value. I’m pretty much sticking with these little guys. My electrician has a box of those shallow electrical boxes just for my skinny little walls. --70.92.xxx.xxx |
