State Specific Question About: COLORADO (CO)
I only need to send out a single 1099-MISC form (albeit it will be late because I goofed) to an independent contractor. I'm awaiting for the IRS to send me the 2018 form.
I do not have Quickbooks, so I'm unaware of any other way to fill in the forms via software. I do all my own taxes via TurboTax Premiere and I don't believe they have any way to create 1099's (I think that might have to be the Home/Business edition which I might have to look into next year).
Can I handwrite in the form? I'm not sure if I much of a choice on this. I did see a Q/A on Amazon.com for such forms where some responders say they have handwritten in the form without issue.
Also, since I've never done this before, do I send a copy to the contractor and one to the IRS (and keep a copy for myself)? --65.126.xxx.xxx |

My wife is an independent contractor and has received handwritten 1099s in the past. No issues. --75.146.xxx.xxx |

I think I might try out Tax1099.com. It seems pretty inexpensive to go through them. I know the IRS will penalize me for being late and I'm curious how quick that will all turn around. --65.126.xxx.xxx |

I fill out my 1099-misc forms by hand, and the IRS has not once complained.
I actually was in the same situation as you and wrote a short note to the IRS to apologize that I didn't send out my 1099-misc to my cotractor earlier. I wrote that I just found out about the law. No penalty was incurred.
Best of luck and hope that your tax filings go well. --73.93.xx.xx |

As long as there is ink in the pen, handwritten is acceptable. --99.59.x.xxx |

To clarify, you may hand-fill-in the form, but you cannot PRINT the form and fill it in. You must either e-File or BUY the form itself (they come in a pack from places like Staples or OfficeMax or whatever).
But you cannot go online and find a form to just print out. You can't go get the 1099-MISC from irs.gov, for example, and print it to hand write. It very specifically says that you cannot do it on the form, unfortunately.

If you're late, I'd suggest blaming the government shut-down. I requested 1098s back in early December. Several weeks went by and they didn't arrive, so I requested them again the first week of January. I finally got them the first week of February (AFTER the due date) and then the second batch two weeks after that. The forms aren't available online; you have to use the triplicate red-ink originals. So not my fault, really. --65.28.xxx.xx |
