Pretty much all big companies and players do that. That's why they contribute to and lobby politicians.
Look at most any pro sports stadium. Who pays for it? The billionaires who own the teams? No! It's the taxpayers. Look at the latest Amazon fiasco in New York. Who have Amazon the billions? The taxpayers.

I was told that Google is quietly expanding.
There is one city I pass through which offered home owners $5,000 to stop renting their home. How long ...I don't know. I advised people against it because one room alone in that city will gross $6,000 per year.

Re: the average Joe getting less in the tax refunds, I think that's more of a high-tax state not being able to do the SALT deductions in the manner previously allowed. I think people in places like SD or WY or NV will be just fine, whereas people in states with high tax burdens will feel it hard.
I think it's good for states to be accountable to their own people. If you're going to tax them aggressively, you need to deal with the consequences locally. If people say, "I'm cool with a 13.3% state income tax on top of all my other taxes, because I know those tax dollars go to support x, y, and z programs," that's one thing. But if people say, "You know, I really liked the idea of x, y, and z, but not if it results in a 13.3% state income tax rate...!" then that's another thing.
That was one reason why only property owners had the vote in the early days of our country. They figured those would be the people most likely to protect their own interests. As the pseudo-quotation goes, "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the people discover they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury." :) --96.46.xxx.xx |

Tax refunds have to do with withholding, not how much tax or the percentage you pay. Withholding was automatically changed with the new tax law, people didn't and possibly could not look ahead to how much to take out. I remember plenty of stories of married vs single and upping the deductions to get a refund. I always wanted to owe just a little bit.
In our state, you can't vote on local school budgets unless you are a resident of that district. Although I may own the property, my tenants who have little skin in the game get to vote. They don't realize their rent goes up with my expenses, so they don't think it affects them.
I keep saying NY would not have to give all these huge tax breaks if the taxes were lower. There are so many more even on the local level that you don't hear about. Like LLs, companies do what helps their bottom line, if their taxes are lower, that helps the bottom line. --108.4.xxx.xx |

I find it interesting how many people, including landlords, get hung up on the media reports of a smaller tax refund.
A tax refund simply means that you gave a 0% interest short-term loan to the government, not how much you paid in taxes. It is actually in your best interest to be even come settlement time.
If you look back into this same media reporting earlier in 2018 you will see that a single person making 25K per year paid $9 less per week into the tax coffer. A family of 4 with $75K income paid $56 less per week. Granted these reports were buried deep and not run as headlines so you have to take the media marketing bias out of it. --50.26.xx.xxx |

More directly to the tax incentives, most of come from a city or state economic development entity, many funded through a set aside sales tax which we voted in years ago. The contracts required for these tax incentives require the recipient to fulfill some positive economic impact to the community, usually jobs at a minimum pay rate or they must repay the investment.
Locally, the incentives used in my town have caused steady growth and there is a good statistically valid record over the last 10+ years that for every $1 spent in incentives it has brought $13.90 back into the local economy. But of course it sounds better in the media to simply villainize Amazon and Google rather than report both sides of the argument so we can make an informed decision. I wonder how long it will be before Corporations will choose to move their operations (and jobs) overseas to avoid the hassle. --50.26.xx.xxx |
