I took it when it first came out years ago.I determined that you weren't going to get in trouble for the actual work that you did but you were far more likely to get in trouble for messing up the paperwork.I decided not to do any of the work myself or by my employees but to hire it out then if I am asked by the feds concerning the work all I have to do is show the certification for the company I hire.Or don't get permits so they don't know you did anything to begin with.There is a lack of competent people who are certified at least in our area so if you got certified you could get work doing it if you wanted to --72.231.xxx.xxx |

The training course teaches ya how to stay out of trouble.
(What not to do)
If ya enroll in the city lead safe program,
its mandatory to rent to "low income tenants only"
for a required amount of months, that turn into years.
My advise:
Hang on Cowboy, it could be a rough ride.

Very important. Please educate yourself for the benefit of your tenants, workers, managers, your family and yourself.
Years ago, as a licensed California Contractor I was required to be certified dealing with lead paint anytime I worked on a property were rent was being subsidized by any government program.
My City, Los Angeles, couldn't care less about the safety of tenants or their children. L.A. only wanted to issue violations and collect fines. Speed, not safety, was their main concern.
I tried to get the State, Federal Government and EPA to educate L.A.'s City government. It wasn't until 5-7 years later did L.A. adopt the State Mandated RRP program.
It was L.A. City's motto, complete the renovation on time, who cares about the children -- or else the landlord will pay a re-inspection fee and fines.
My City charged me $250 for not doing the work withing an 18 to 30 day period. The EPA and/or State would fine me $37,500 a day for exposing tenants or not keeping records.
I got a letter once, I had to pay a $75,000 fine, to be split between L.A. and a governing body. I did not use their approved method, I used an alternative method -- something they never heard of. Why? Because no one issues fines read the Manuel. GO figure. --47.156.xx.xx |

Since I do most work myself, and I generally follow the process, I thought it might not be a bad idea. Esp. if working on that random window. I was thinking more that I'd be on a list and would that raise a flag and subject me to scrutiny. I've gone to lots of OSHA training over the years and am generally curious about learning safe work practices. Every time I drive by a road crew locally I just shake my head because they are not properly set up or anything. Of course the municipality isn't likely to get docked in these situations, so they ignore them. --24.194.xx.xx |

I've been RRP certified since it first came out & continue to renew my certification as needed. IMO it's basically a wasted of time & money. My main issue with it is that if there were 2 identical houses side by side, I as a licensed insured RRP contractor would have to follow lead safe procedures for most renovations where as on the house next door Joe homeowner wouldn't have to comply. If we really wanted to protect the "children" & the community shouldn't we all have to follow the same lead safe procedures. --96.237.xx.xx |

Steve, I guess though if someone passed by and saw you working and you could show them RRP certification they might leave you alone. But if you didn't have it you might get written up. In the end you wouldn't be docked worse for having RRP. To me it's another thing that makes me look better. I had to do lead abatement (painting over) as part of a grant program, but the area was less than 600 SF and I was told RRP didn't apply. --24.194.xx.xx |

Yes I did this last year. My houses were all built in the 60s so this was good info for me. I got some useful info, and feel better about safely doing any work or at least vetting contractors. I don't know of any slippery slope. --99.92.xxx.xxx |

One of more interesting pieces of info I got from the course were the percentages of likelihood for a place to have lead as a function of it's age.
I thought most places had it if they were older than 1978. It depends on the construction year --72.23.xxx.xx |
