One of my rental houses has a 2.5 ton gas furnace / AC unit all in one metal box outside (package unit) that is 22 years old and is requiring constant maintenance. I have a licensed HVAC man who told me yesterday that he can continue trying to fix this old unit, however, replacement parts (ie: mother-board) for a 22-year old Trane unit are horribly expensive or he can install a brand new 2.5 ton package unit with a 10 year parts and labor warranty.
Again, this is a change-out,...where the existing duct work stays put and the old unit is removed and a new package unit is put in its place.
Considering a 2.5 ton HVAC system, what you would expect to pay for this box and installation? --68.63.xxx.xxx |

I would say the pricing depends on your area.
I personally would probably expect it to be in the range of 5k-6k.
It would also be a good idea to have all of the duct work and insulation inspected. There is a good possibility it being that old that it needs replaced or repaired or at least reinsulated if it is metal duct. Even the metal duct can rust out or work apart and the the flexible duct probably would need replaced.
It sounds like you would be better off for sure replacing the unit. Will probably save you money in the end. Less calls to the HVAC guy. --73.120.xx.xxx |

AC Wholesalers has a 2.5 ton package unit for just under $1900.00 shipped to your location.
I usually buy the unit, then I have my Heat and Air guy do the install for a flat fee. Usually $500 to $1800 depending on the degree of replacement. Some have included all new duct work, hence the higher price. I've installed four of the AC wholesaler Goodman units the past five years, and all have performed well. No problems. --99.104.xxx.xx |

Roy, your estimate should hold. Last year, in the middle of the summer, when wholesellers were out of stock, I replaced the same size roof mounted package unit, with a crane service it came to $4500. I was limited by size, it had to fit the roof stand, so of course I paid a little more - but it had to be done.

Here we have the same space problems with less than 1000 square feet houses also. I have seen 40 gal. water heaters get installed in the attic and HVAC returns get crammed into a small hall closet or the hole in the floor where the old gas floor furnace used to be.
Are you all still using swamp coolers out there? I did not even know what a swamp cooler was until I visited CA. --68.63.xxx.xxx |

Roy, When I started buying homes, some had swamp cooling systems and some had no cooling. Heating was required by law (even in this hot place). However, today they are all gone, replaced by central A/Cs. The main trouble with swamp coolers: they don't dry the air.
I had floor furnaces, wall furnaces (which were very efficient). I installed central A/Cs in all the homes which did not have them. Today, you can't get high rents without central air. --99.59.x.xxx |

In my town, HVAC units (in the housing projects) are installed on 10 ft. high steel towers so copper thieves will choose something else that is easier to steal. That is another reason for a roof-top installation. --68.63.xxx.xxx |
