Richard: Taxes do make a big difference and Michigan has a lot of them -- but it sounds like your area is a bit high anyhow. It's around $2.05/gallon through mid to northern Michigan today (from south of Mount Pleasant through north of Cadillac).

Heck, according to GasBuddy, it is $1.74 in East Lansing right now at several stations!

From an overall economy sense, higher gas prices (above $3.00) would be more of a benefit to our economy than lower gas prices. Low gas prices means we become more dependent on foreign sources of oil (OPEC) as opposed to tapping our own energy sources here in the U.S. We have plenty of untapped oil reserves in Alaska but at $2.00/gallon for gas, it does not make any business sense to drill and pump it out. --68.63.xxx.xxx

Roy, lower gas prices give Americans more disposable income to buy other things.

Also, I read that shale oil production has gotten a lot more cost efficient and Texas is gonna keep pumping even as Saudi Arabia increases production and the prices fall. --73.141.xxx.xxx

If you were to cut your rents in half, that would give your tenants more money to spend on other things too. Catch my drift? That is how oil producing states like Texas, CA and Alaska feel right now!

Also, did you know that oil in the U.S. was first discovered in your state of PA ? PA used to be a big oil producing state. --68.63.xxx.xxx

Natural Gas still isn't expensive enough for them to do much with it in need-to-pipe-from areas. Alaska is the big one here. They have been pulling natural gas out for decades (it comes out along with the oil -- it gets separated as it comes out into oil, water, and natural gas). But, they have no way to transport it cheaply. So, for decades, they have been pumping it right back into the ground to store until it makes sense.

I've heard BP people call it "the bank" -- it just sits there waiting for when oil prices drop and/or NG prices go up. At some point, they fully expect that the main Alaskan pipelines will be shifted over from transporting oil to transporting natural gas.

There is a TON of NG sitting in Alaska right now just waiting for oil to run out or lose enough value. --24.180.xxx.xxx
