It took years for the present governor to undo the housing damage that the previous governor did. The past politician put the homeless in hotels to lower the number of homeless before the election ( along with creating some programs that didn't really work ). There were thousands of people with housing vouchers living in hotels. Now there are about 40. There is a group of them that tried to sue the state because they want to be put in hotels instead of shelters or housing units. I believe they are disabled and feel it is a reasonable accomodation. A trial judge agreed with them. Today the Supreme Court reversed that, as the available shelter space provided is just as accessible as the hotels they requested. We do have an ample supply of affordable housing in my area and the group involved was out of the Boston area where I imagine there is not much affordable housing and that is probably why they are fighting to stay there. Regardless, nice to see that " reasonable accomodation" is not allowed to be abused in this case.

My husband and I occasionally stay in low-budget motels when we travel to contra dances. All we need is a place to sleep and shower, so it doesn't make sense to splurge on luxury hotels. That said, the last few times in the Monterey Bay area of California we have had terrible stays due to many of the homeless people with vouchers being housed there. They sit outside their doors smoking, blocking walkways, congregating in the parking lot, shouting at each other and fighting. The situation made us uncomfortable enough not to stay there again. These folks like hotels/motels because there are fewer behavioral restrictions than homeless shelters and government-provided housing. It's probably some attys, not the homeless people crying UNREASONABLE.
I am not agasint the homeless. I am against lawyers attacking the people who make our economy function - like hotels and LLs. Without us who would pay the taxes for the govt programs for the homeless?

I also have nothing against the homeless. This wasn't about the voucher holder themselves. This was about the policy makers who were handling the situation. They finally found a solution and not just a band aid . They built more affordable housing units, made more shelter beds available, relocated them to where the housing was and then shut off the hotel money. They made it about really fixing the problem not just making it look that way before an election. When someone tried to throw a monkey wrench in the works, the court sided with the system that was working simply because it used common sense.There is hope!!!! --71.10.xxx.xxx |
