This is too funny:
https://fox8.com/2018/10/09/woman-removed-from-flight-bound-for-cleveland-due-to-emotional-support-squirrel/
ORLANDO, Fla. — Frontier Airlines said a woman had to be escorted off a flight bound for Cleveland Tuesday night due to a squirrel.
Frontier said a passenger boarded Flight 1612 in Orlando, saying the squirrel was an emotional support animal.
The airline said the passenger noted in her reservation that she was bringing an emotional support animal, but it was not indicated the animal was a squirrel.
Frontier said “rodents, including squirrels are not allowed” on its flights.
The passenger was advised of the policy and asked to get off the plane.
The airline said when she refused, Orlando police were called and requested everyone be deplaned so they could deal with the passenger.
Police eventually escorted her off the plane and took her to the main terminal.
The flight was set to be on its way to Cleveland later Tuesday evening.

Doogie,
Just saw that!
We have Emotional Support Squirrels in our back yard. They help my dog release her anxiety when she catches them.
They help OUR anxiety as we watch them taunt the dog.
M’am, if you cannot contain yourself for the 2-3 hour flight, please contact Greyhound Bus Line.
I appreciate these folks ringing ESA animals to airplanes. They are exposing the fraud.

That way a court can set some precendence for limiting this whole ESA abuse. --174.234.xxx.xx |

Indeed -- I'd actually like to see this in court. Basically, I'm not sure what grounds the airline has to refuse based on it being a rodent. A couple other airlines have recently changed their policies to reflect this same thing, but I can't figure out how they are getting around the ACAA.
This really does apply directly to us as landlords. It's a different law, but the concept is the same. I'd love to see it get some real legal attention. Everyone just goes "HA! She tried to take a SQUIRREL on the plan!", but doesn't seem to realize that the law appears to be on her side. I'd love for that to change.

Oh -- nevermind. The ACAA actually specifically states that airlines are allowed to reject certain "unusual" animals including rodents, snakes, other reptiles, ferrets, and spiders). So THAT is how they are able to get around it.
Unfortunately, the law we have to worry about (FHAA) doesn't contain any such exceptions.

Airlines probably refused squirrel on the grounds of safety. If that little critter got loose, he could cause damage. Squirrels crawl in small spaces and chew wires. Lots of wires on aircraft. A good portion of them actually keep the plane in the air.
What are the exact words of the airline exclusion? Maybe we should become airlines and declare houses airplanes. --108.69.xxx.xxx |

I actually can't find the full text of the ACAA online, oddly enough.
Also, the original ACAA did NOT exclude "unusual animals" like rodents. It was added more recently after concern from the airlines. But, again, I can't find the ACTUAL text of that. Which seems really weird to me! :)

So she was taken off the plane, she held up a lot of people and a large airplane. I believe all the punishment was she was put on another plane without her squirrel.Seems like the airlines never press any charges for things that disrupts other customers who may miss connecting flights /meetings etc.
I wish they would impose fines for all the money and inconvenience these people cause... maybe put pressure on lawmakers to pass tougher laws regarding disruptions

In many states it is simply illegal to keep a squirrel as a pet, and in other it requires a special license. --50.82.xxx.xx |

Ken: Sure, in this particular case. But it could have just as easily been a boa constrictor or a ferret or some other similar animal which CAN be legally kept as a pet in most states.
As an example, hamsters and guinea pigs are considered rodents and therefore wouldn't be allowed on a plane as an ESA. But they WOULD qualify as ESA under the FHAA that we have to worry about.

Another question I have that I think is the bigger issue here: why was she allowed into the airport all the way to a plane in the first place? No carriers, to my knowledge, allow rodents on their airlines. They also do not fall under the ADA. So, why are they even allowed through security in the first place? These sorts of animals should have been stopped LONG before anyone gets to a gate.

I know this technically isn't a "pet" but it's illegal to own squirrels as pets in some states, and in others you have a special license to own one. They're wild animals and could be dangerous if allowed to run loose in a house, maybe even worse than having a pit. --72.188.xxx.xxx |

Yes, that's what I think Ken was saying above. I did some quick checking and squirrels are illegal to have pretty much everywhere except for a few limited municipalities.
That being said, you can find a bunch of people who have them as pets online too. So, clearly, this isn't very strongly enforced. :)

I wonder if that woman drugged it with something to keep it docile -- how would you keep an animal like that under control? They don't seem like they could be tamed.

She actually did have it in a normal pet cage/carrier thing.
That being said, if you Google it or check YouTube, you'll actually see lots of people with squirrels as pets that actually do seem surprisingly docile. So, apparently, it can be done.
(Not saying that they should be allowed on planes or anything. Just saying that this one was caged and they can be trained/domesticated, apparently.)
