Here in NJ we remove stoves when we are taking an apartment off line because it's not up to code. I did that for a basement apartment that had a low ceiling. Microwaves in community environments often catch fire because people don't pay attention to what materials they put in. Induction cooktops require specific cookware that rooming folk prolly don't have. I think a stove is a must in an apt. --24.194.xx.xx

Another option is they make a device that you put at the wall plug or somehow wired into the stove that if you are not standing there infront of the stove for X number of minutes it will trun itself off. Its made for senior citizens and the handiman can install. My eldery neighbor had one installed...she could not make an all day stew on the stove top anymore cause she couldn't stand there infront of the stove for hours! What about installing an induction cooktop? It doesn't get hot, just the contents in the pan gets hot, but it does require induction cookware otherwise it won't get hot. So the only issue of fire would be from the contents igniting. You'd have that risk on a hot plate too. My fear of a hotplate is that you can't restrict where it will be placed. GKARL, I agree that a lot of apartment tenants, especially in smaller apartments with only one person, don’t cook more than heating up frozen meals and takeout. I am not familiar with convection microwaves which apparently bake, but unless they are very large, would limit what you could bake. Our son is a millennial minimalist, lives in a studio, but does all his own cooking for health reasons and his main complaint about his last 2 apartments is that they don’t have a full size oven. Although some would not mind no stove, I think it would limit your prospects. Even if people don’t cook much, not having a regular kitchen reminds me of a dorm room and how many older adults want that atmosphere. --74.140.xxx.xxx
