What on earth is going on in this country?

There is a college in Salt Lake City Utah that is setting up cry closets for students who are feeling too much pressure during their college finals.

They can go in there and cry!

I know I'm part of the younger generation on this board, but the people that are my age and younger, really scare me with this stuff.

What are they going to do when they get out in the real world?

These younger kids are so coddled and cushioned from the realities and any difficulties in life that it's just gonna be a whole bunch of babies.

I wondwr how much I could get in rent for one of these things?

Way too many people who are just scared of their own shadows.

Sorry, I'm done with the rant. This stuff really just gets under my skin.

This is becoming endemic among the younger generation. They have been called the most stressed generation in history. And it is not confined to the US.

A recent study shows that 55% of today's <25 suffer from depression and mental health issues. It also shows they don't have the coping skills to deal with their anxiety and depression.

There are numerous causes but the ones most frequently mentioned are helicopter parents who are focused are their own needs, the breakdown of the family unit, higher divorce rates, greater competition from getting into getting into a "good" school to finding a job, student loans and of course social media.

Over the last few years there have been a lot of studies done and articles written on this topic but they don't seem to have any answers to address this. --71.75.xx.xx

I think if the pressure is so great that Cry Closet's are being set up then perhaps little Johnny or Suzie need to go home and have a serious chat with their folks. They probably aren't ready/mature enough for that level of education. A year spent working in a trade would give them a taste of the real world and the possibilities out there. Kids are coddled too much now by parents, schools, and society that they end up with little or no clue how to deal with anything once they're turned lose to live in the world. --199.253.xxx.xx

No one's wising up to the fact that little Johnny will be paying for that degree for years and years to come. Someone mentioned the Cry Closet the other day, and someone else responded, "In our school district, we have a Shouthouse." Basically a little shed out back for people to go yell in when they feel frustrated.

Now all we have to do is combine the tiny house movement to solve homelessness, with the concept of the Shouthouse. I bet the homeless guys would be better than a therapist/counselor about getting people to put their problems in perspective... but we can pay them a counselor's salary to chat with the kids who come to use them, and poof, now they can move up in the world and leverage the experience into a better job...

This is one of those "be leery of the news site that you read about it on" situations.

These "cry closets" are an ART PROJECT from a graduating senior that just did them for fun. They were installed only last week and will be removed the first week of May and that's the end of them.

It's literally just some temporarily (less than 2 week) "art project" idea from a single student. It isn't the school doing this because they think the "snowflakes" need it to cope or anything.

I think this is just being blown out of proportion. It's basically a nothing story that some media outlets have jumped on to support a specific view about students being coddled.

I expect this won't be popular, but we should not stigmatize people who may be having mental health issues.

Whether or not you or I think an individual's situation is or is not stressful is irrelevant. Telling people they just need to toughen up makes it a stigma to seek help. Not seeking helping makes things worse. The number of suicides in young people is alarming and tragic. It has struck close to my home a number of times and it is heartbreaking.

Play doh, finger paints, and cry closets fuel it.

You will see these at other schools, I guarantee it.

College is supposed to be tempering for the real world.

If you have mental health issues so severe that you can't handle college, why are you there? Equal opportunity? I don't know, maybe, but I do know it won't get any better once your out from a stress standpoint.

If you're having a break down on campus to the point of NEEDING something like this, you're probably in the wrong field to begin with. Just my opinion.

These will most likely become selfie booths and dope shooting booths anyway.

Just my opinions. :) --50.107.xxx.xxx

Deanna, I was ROTF, trying to hold it in!

NE, You were one of the lucky ones. This new group is not prepared for stress. No one has taught them to 'see past the problem.'

My father was a great teacher of his children. He asked questions that made us THINK. If we had a problem, he would ask "How did you get there?" Then, "How will you try to fix this?" When the problem was SO BIG we were swamped with negativity He would say "Maybe its time to eat the elephant" (meaning time to break it down to small bites.)

Well, a cry closet or a shout room is better than most of the alternatives, like drugs, alcohol, explosions of anger or suicide. However the college would do better by teaching the students to go thru the 3-step program (recognize the problem, retrace the poor decisions that got you here, and

take small steps to work thru it till you get past it. --108.87.xx.xxx

Marijuana, which is a depressant, can cause rebound anxiety when a chronic user stops using it. This is much in the same mechanism as when someone who uses sleeping pills regularly has worse insomnia when they quit using the sleeping pills.

You would not believe the number of young adults who claim anxiety and use "medical marijuana" to control their anxiety. (Of course, the medical marijuana proponents will recommend more marijuana use -- but marijuana is not "addictive"!) I think a lot of this so-called increased anxiety young people experience is because our society incentivizes emotionally disabled people -- all the way from SSI to ESA to special considerations in higher education.. Pmh: With a simple search, you will find tons of sources indicating that it is an "art project." Or, heck, more accurately, it is actually WOOD SHOP project that a student (Nemo Miller) installed -- and they intended it as a bit of "humor" as opposed to being a real "cry closet" of any kind.

Here's one source if you want: www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2018/04/26/cry-closet-utah-university-library/553082002/

Again, the university did NOT "put them in" at all. They simply granted permission to a wood shop student to put them in for a couple of weeks.

It was not done for the "snow flakes" or even to help people cope with anything. That seems to be more of an afterthought.

Again, much ado about nothing.

My only "knickers in a twist" here is the number of people that appear to be only getting their news from clearly biased sources. Again, if your "news" gave this story without that additional information, then it is a poor news source.

you gave the comic newspaper as your source to support your position. as you said, many papers have picked up on this. Your reference is the only one that apparently states it was an art project by a wood shop student. All sources I see state it was university initiative to “help” the snowflakes (my description) deal with the stress of finals...I deal with millennials all the time - most have no initiative, gumption or motivation to work their way up. It really is a problem for businesses wanting to hire as it is in mine. --104.218.xxx.xx

Ok, fine, I'll do the Google search for you then. As I said, here are a bunch of results that come up when you search for this -- all confirming that it was an art project installation by a wood shop student:

dailyutahchronicle.com/2018/04/25/barber-nemo-millers-cry-closet-helps-students-during-finals-week/

- says that the student is a ceramics art student, but did this different thing as their final project.

mashable.com/2018/04/25/cry-closet-university-of-utah-art-project

- confirms that it was installed by a STUDENT that is a "visual artist"

www.businessinsider.com/cry-closet-stressed-college-students-university-of-utah-campus-2018-4

- confirms that a student made it mostly for humorous purposes, but that "others took it seriously and were angered by the project"

- also confirms that the university itself joked about it, but encouraged people to check out the art project

- also confirmed that the university didn't pay anything for this as it was just an art project covered completely by the student.

www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Cry-Closet-University-of-Utah-Nemo-Miller-480942231.html

- confirms that the university did NOT install it and that it was all by the student, Nemo Miller

www.ksl.com/?sid=46307980

- confirms it is an art project only and under the students control to install and remove, not the university.

abc7chicago.com/education/universitys-cry-closet-beckons-stressed-students-to-let-it-all-out/3400196/

- confirms it is an art project

www.kansascity.com/news/nation-world/article209870044.html

- confirms it is made by "a senior in fine arts"

- confirms that she installed it herself with the university's PERMISSION, but not assistance or funding.

- states: "Miller designed and built it, with help from her dad and uncle, as part of an assignment for a woodshop class..."

Sorry, but your suggestion that the first link I posted is the "only one" that states it was an art or wood shop project is ridiculous. There are TONS of confirmations of that information.

Again, if you aren't seeing that on your news, then your news isn't giving the entire story. It is TRIVIAL to confirm this information -- yet all of your news sources have ignored it? Again, if that is the case, time to find better news sources.

Good job John. It still doesn't negate the trend towards these types of things.

Actually, your research helped prove it a bit.

The wood shop student made it as a joke, pretty much.

People took it serious and were angered! Jokes on them. --50.32.xxx.xxx

Oh, I agree -- I see the entitlement and "safe space cry closet" people just like the rest of you do.

I'm just not a fan of clearly biased news that want to turn it into something more than it really is.

We have enough REAL things like this as it is without half the media needing to turn it into something that it clearly wasn't.

The fact that there are SO MANY news sources out there reporting that the University installed these "cry closets" to help the students cope -- with no mention of the FACT that it was an art project by a single student with no University support/backing other than giving them permission to put it in there for a couple weeks -- just shows that there is clear bias going on.

So, yes, I hate the entitlement attitude out there. I had the "babying everything" attitude out there. But I also hate the clear agenda-pushing media (and just everyday people!) out there that bend whatever they can to fit their narrative.

I also find it funny that so many of the media stories that don't mention that it is an art project also like to say it was CLOSETS (as in plural). Even this thread and the original post from you says "setting up cry closetS" as if there are multiples of them. Again, the reality is that the student just made a single one, of course.

In any case, yes, I agree -- for those getting all the wrong info and then getting riled up about it -- the jokes on them (but most will never see it). Heck, even when I tried to give the right information, we still have some people here refusing to believe it, saying that there are no other sources to back it up (even though there are lots and they were easy to find), and saying that I'm the one not seeing it. It's just insane to me. Some people refuse to see the truth or even do a tiny bit of research to try to confirm what they've been told. :(

And then they'll say the millennials are lazy... At least the millennials know how to do a Google search...

Seriously, John? News sources seeming biased? This is a new development. We should get ABC, CBS, and NBC news to get to the bottom of this. Maybe the Huffington Post, NY Times, and Washington Post will pick up on it also.

This could start a new trend. This could be called, "Fake News" or something like that. --50.45.xxx.xxx

perhaps because they text all the time and have little idea of how to deal with people one on one. I truly believe conversations via text are one of the stupidest things folks do. I absolutely refuse to be a part o what I call "the dumbing down of America".

A message? great. Conversation? never. Having upholstery cleaned tomorrow. I had a conversation with them about what, when, how much, etc. They will text me 1/2 hour prior to arrival. Sounds good to me. --72.70.xxx.xx
