How long do vinyl vertical blinds last, specifically the hole at the top of the blinds that attach to the valance?
At the top of my blind stats, some of the slats have broken over
the years. I have been fixing the broken tops with tape, but the tape gives out and the blinds fall down.
I asked my landlord to replace the broken slats, but they say
that I am responsible for replacing the slats.
The blinds came with the apartment and are over 18 years old.
I don't have pets or children and I have done nothing other than usual usage of the blinds.
I have lived in my apartment for 18 years. I take good care of my
place and I always pay my rent ahead of time. The rent is very
expensive.
I ESPECIALLY would like to know how long the tops of vinyl
vertical blinds usually last. I would like to give my landlord an expected lifetime of the tops of the blinds so that maybe they will pay to replace them. --47.147.xxx.xxx |

I guess I would keep repairing them as best I could. I think your landlord is a cheap #$%^. Are you able to move? You are obviously not breaking the slats. Probably it's just sun and heat damage and just plain old plastic breaking down. Do you have family who could help you move? Is it possible that the real owner of the building doesn't even know you are having a problem and you are talking to some dumb clerk? I would get out of there before something more serious needed repair and you get the same bad treatment. I just spent $1,200 on new blinds for one of my rentals so the tenants would have something nice to look at and easy to use. If there is danger they could fall on you and hurt you I would call the health department in the town. But it sounds like your landlord is an uncaring psychopath so it probably wouldn't matter anyway. Start looking around for another place. --73.33.xxx.xxx |

Sounds like you can't count on your LL to fix it. To do it yourself, get a pkg of replacement slats for $12 at home depot. Maybe cheaper online. Otherwise cut a new hole/slot on the old slat as someone else mentioned. --157.245.xx.xx |

After 18 years that is just normal wear and tear. You can buy new vertical blinds, just the slants. $20 and they will cut them to length. Your state is different in may ways about tenant and LL relationships... Sorry about that .... --66.87.xx.xx |

There is a repair clip called a Verticle blind vane saver. You press the Curved Metal Clips over the broken Carrier tabs on your Vinyl Vertical Blind Vanes to allow the carrier to hold the vane in place. They are much cheaper than replacing the vanes. --100.6.xx.xxx |

Thank you for your responses. The funny thing is, the landlord and I have always had a good relationship. They have been very prompt in fixing other things, as few as they were. I fix small things myself. We have friendly talks on the phone and in person. As I mentioned, I have lived here 18 years. That is because I love this apartment and the location, and it is very hard to find a nice place in Long Beach, CA.
I could take your suggestions to fix the blinds myself, like punching new holes at the bottom of the slats and hang from the new hole. I have looked into what it would cost to replace the slats myself. It isn't all that expensive, but there could be a problem in matching the color, weight, and quality of the blinds I have now. I believe the landlord has a source that would match the blinds perfectly. I might try approaching the landlord one more time. If that doesn't work, I think I will have no choice but to try buying slats that match myself.

1. Vertical blinds can last forever if they are well-treated. Otherwise, they will not last forever.
2. Your LL is correct, that broken slots are damage and the tenant is responsible for their replacement.
3. Richard of MI suggests punching a hole in the other end of a slat. That will allow the slat to be hung, but it leaves an unsightly hole in the bottom, plus you the tenant will ultimately be responsible for replacement when you finally move out.
4. There are other gimmicks which can be used to repair slats with broken slots. There are things call "vane savers" which are pieces of plastic with adhesive and a slot, which can cover the broken slot with a strengthened slot. They are available at a drapery & blind store. Back in the old days when I used to use them, I found that after a few years, they discolored and were no longer invisible, and look bad.
5. Van savers are also available in a metal model.
6. I get new vanes for a low price. I bought a whole box years ago, 83", and cut them with a scissors to fit smaller sizes. A few dollars each.
7. After 18 years, if your LL is not willing to make you a gift of new window coverings, he's a cheapskate.

They have never worked for us. They always seem to break. I've tried every brand same result. It doesn't seem that price makes a difference in longevity.
I would get rid of them but I can't figure out what else to use with sliding glass doors.

Go to a vertical blinds store not Home Depot and they sell a metal piece which goes over the top of the blind. Now that extends the life of the vertical blind to many many years. Cost is about a dollar each. --75.22.xx.xx |

Yes Nicole of PA vertical blinds are dated window coverings. The best place for vertical blinds are in the garbage.
NC Investor, thats the reason for vertical blinds they are used on sliding glass doors. However go to Walmart.com check out the Panel Blinds for Sliding Glass Doors. Now that being said I have not used them so I am not sure the negatives of the 3 panels for a slider. --99.56.xx.xx |

Flip the blind upside down - have the new hole there, the headrails used to be all metal gears now only the big bux blinds have metal, not suitable for most rental people but you can re-use your slats by punching the other end - HD or lowes prolly do it free. --76.188.xxx.xx |
