Can anyone explain to me where the air filter is and how one changes it on a Trane XR90 Furnace?
These new-fangled units confuse me. --68.39.xxx.xxx |

The air filter is factory installed in the base of the furnace. There is a thin strip of metal covering it, usually with thumb screws so you don't need tools to remove.
However, many installers (myself included) will replace this filter with one or more in another location.
I have been using "whole house" filters for several years now. They are in the same location, but in a separate box about 6 inches thick. Same thumb screw set up. These filters only need changing every 6 months to a year.
Some installers use filter grilles, where the filter(s) are just behind the return air grilles. You should be able to see them if they are in that location. --141.129.x.xx |

When you find it, mark the location, size and direction of air flow for the next person. --97.94.xx.xxx |

Your air filter, in many cases will be located in a vent that enters the ceiling or wall, referred to as a fresh air return.Look for this in various rooms of your house, and you will find that the "grate" on the front of the vent will unlatch and open allowing you access to the inside, where you may find the air filter.
However, in many cases, the filter is mounted at the bottom of the furnace, or at the top of the furnace, and sometimes on the side of it. --75.121.xx.xx |

I have found at least a few furnaces over the years that had no filter installed. Yes, they all need a filter.

I have the XV90, probably similar.
Look at the bottom panel. It should have two black levers/knobs near the top, one on each side. Twist the left one a quarter turn to the left, the right one a quarter turn to the right. This releases the cover. As you pull the top of the panel toward you, lift it a little.
You will hear the air handler shut off, as you have disengaged the switch by opening the cover. The filter should be upright, on the left side (where the duct enters the unit). You simply slide it out. Be sure to replace it with the same size, and have the "air" arrow pointed into the unit.
Replace the cover, bottom first, then tilt top in. Twist both knobs a quarter turn to the center. Wait and listen, you should hear the fan ramp up if it was running when you opened the unit. Done. --71.175.xxx.xx |
