I had this problem before where I am having animals climb up gutters, dig holes in my roof and then find themselves a nice warm spot in my attic. Trying to get them out was a nightmare. I put a trap on the ground and caught all different kind of animals. Then, I put it on the roof and caught the raccoon, then he was jumping all over the place until the cage slide off the roof and he got away. I then tied a rope to the roof and around the chimney, caught another racoon. The raccoon then tore up my roof with him jumping all over the place. I eventually took off the gutters to solve the problem. I can't do that with this property though. Any suggestions?

Get a tiger? Yeesh, raccoons. That's a new one on me. There's a site that sells predator urine, maybe try that. Predatorpee.com --204.195.xx.xx

Wait till you have the 2 legged animals doing this, but you need to get trim coil bent to fit behind the gutters where the wood is now so they can not dig/gnaw and get thru the wood for access, I have seen the roofers fabricate metal that goes where the downspout retainers are that is shaped like a paper plate to deflect climbing animals in general but if there are tree branches the tree animals will always have a jumping contest. --76.188.xxx.xxx

I think Vee is on to something... some kind of smooth metal defector that the critters cannot hang on to and get around... I don't know if razor wire would work..sounds like a tough problem to solve --107.77.xx.xx

I think you mean downspouts, not gutters.

I once had this problem...this is the time of year raccoons are looking for someplace warm before winter, they think they own the place, it's very hard to get rid of them.

You can try coating the downspouts with something like white lithium grease and the hottest hot pepper powder you can find, wrap them with barbed wire, and re-install. It may not work, but at least you've irritated them. Staple 1/2" wire hardware cloth over the openings they've made, if those holes are in the wood fascia...if in the roof surface, eh, you've got problems.

Only thing that worked for me was cutting back every tree branch that over hung the roof, and, since I was planning on getting a new roof, I had the roofer tear off all the wood behind the gutters and at the gable ends, and install aluminum soffits and fascia.

Yes I did mean down spouts.

The first thing I do when I buy properties is cut down all trees around the property. I have done the trim coil idea before for squirrels and it worked well. I like the idea of the metal shield. I think I might just lube the hell out of the downspouts hoping they can't get a grip on it. I also have a balcony over there that I might put the trap on. --207.63.xxx.x

Watch out! Those are aliens on squirrel bodies. They will take over your house, perform experiments on your tenants. I had this happen 3 years ago. They were never the same. --66.31.xx.xx

If your in the country, .22 lr.

I think they sell wire mesh downspout wraps for this specific reason. It will act as a cone shaped collar to go around the downspout. Just do a little google research. --50.32.xxx.xx

I did the google research before asking the question. I maybe typing in the wrong phrase. I'm getting a little mad I can't seem to find the answer. I had this happen to me 3 times now.

Wrap the downspout with wire mesh? I have no choice. --71.239.xxx.xxx
