State Specific Question About: WISCONSIN (WI)

Is it legal to ask a new applicant if they have a bb problem in their present apt? Roach proof is my go to and no roaches for 14 years but I can't afford bb extermination in a 20 unit. Thanks --50.172.xx.xxx

My son asked me to look at a lease he might sign for a new place in Texas and they had 2 pages dedicated to bed bugs,he had to fill it out saying he has or does not have bud bugs in his current place and he has 48 hours to let them know if he finds bed bugs. This is a huge complex so I assume it is legal to ask. --24.92.xx.xxx

There's no problem with asking whether they have bedbugs and it's a good idea to ask. Getting a truthful answer from someone who has them is another issue.

If someone did bring in bedbugs, it's unlikely that you'd have to exterminate the entire property because bedbugs don't travel far and are often only found in the room where they were introduced.

There are several DIY methods for exterminating them which you can find with an internet search. Probably the easiest is to heat the room to 116 degrees using electric heaters once the room is prepared. I did that a few months ago and we haven't seen a live bedbug since.

^^^ That's good to know Aldo. So basically your saying all I have to do out here is open the doors and windows and let some cooler air in?

It was 119 here today. :-) --24.156.xx.xx

cedar bend,

I don't know WI law but see no other reason you cannot ask.

BUT Know that a YES means YES, but a NO can mean YES.

Some people WILL tell.

I asked applicants this the past few years. I phrased it asking if they, or anyone in their building, had bed bugs. I told them if so and they were moving in that "we" could possibly have their possessions treated prior to moving in. Of course had they said yes, they wouldn't have been approved.

No one ever said they had them and no one brought them ... of course, current tenants who got new mattresses from the Rent A Center dumpster brought some in !! --174.55.xxx.xxx
