Interesting from the Scoe 10x site.

I've used this product before on cat urine and it was the only thing I found to work ,....at least in the carpet that I used it on..

But here is their comments on trying to seal odors with painting the area.

WHY SEALING OR PAINTING WILL NOT STOP ODOR

Sealing or painting a surface to stop odor may seem like a good idea with one coating company in particular promoting the idea. However, the idea is really bad and will not work. Once the science of odor is understood, sealing or painting a surface to stop odor is just physically impossible.

This has to do with the size of the molecule your nose detects as odor and how paints and sealers dry.

The odor molecule is a gas molecule produced by the odor causing bacteria eating urine residue deposits. It's size is in the 2-5 micron size range. A very small particle.

However, when a coating such as a sealer or paint is applied, the solvent in the coating (water or oil based) needs to evaporate for the coating to dry. The evaporation process leaves very small holes in the coating usually in the 25-45 micron size range. This also is a very small hole (cannot be seen by the naked eye), but compared to the 2-5 size micron odor molecule, it is indeed, very large.

Consequently, when the odor causing bacteria (eating the urine residue under the coating) release the odor molecule, it finds its way through the holes in the coating to your nose. And thereby telling you, you just wasted your time and money coating the floor or wall. --96.236.xxx.xx

I am thinking, if you have painted over, maybe extra coat of polyurethane or equivalent to cover the mistake.

A LL friend of mine painted over stairs and floors where 3 dead dogs were. The odd lingered.. not sure if it is gone or not after 1 year.

Or spray some FlexSeal? (expensive, but that is supposed to seal and water proof). don't know micron size on that --75.67.x.xxx

I used polyurethane over a cat urine spot on a hardwood floor and it killed the odor. I guess the microscopic holes in the urethane didn't land in the same place as the molecules of bacteria that were emitting gas.

To kill the smell in a room full of cat pee that leaked down between floor boards, I cleaned thoroughly then I nailed down luan, then tiled over the luan and then had the carpet padding and carpet installed.

That worked perfectly.

I highly recommend Odor-Xit.

I bought a bank-owned 3 family that had been left open and was the home/porta-potti to several stray cats. A "helpful" neighbor was even feeding them.

When I first viewed the property the realtor wouldn't even go in. The cat piss smell made your eyes water and your wanted to wretch.

I got that property for a song because other investors didn't even want to go thru the front door.

When I bought it, I donned a respirator and ripped out all carpets. Then I mixed Odor-Xit in a 2 gallon garden sprayer and saturated all floors and walls up to 2 feet.

This first application solved 90% of the problem. The second application was 100% successful.

That was 6 years ago. No cat odor has ever been detected by any tenant.

Good luck. --50.136.xx.xxx

Okay, it won't work, but I have painted over several floors in the past several years, that were saturated with urine. Never had a problem after the first coat. Before you tell me it doesn't work, try it! --173.202.xxx.x

I make it a habit to paint over bare subflooring, with whatever leftover paint I have.

I just got several free cans of traffic yellow and safety red oil based paint. That paint is going on the subfloor of our current project.

It doesn't have bad odors, but there is more reason than just odor to seal the floors:

It slows air infiltration

Fills in little cracks where bugs enter

slows or stops water damage from the top down

Smooths the top surface

And if you are laying a second layer of subfloor, do it with wet paint between... it helps lock the panels together and completely eliminates floor squeak. --141.129.x.xx

I have successfully sealed out pet/human urine smell in multiple apartments by using oil based floor paint or polyurethane. I have an apartment with beautiful refinished pine floors. When I got the building, the floors were saturated with pitbull/toddler urine through the carpet and we couldn't even remove all of the carpet padding stuck to the floor until we sanded them down. It's now gorgeous, and completely odor-free after three coats of polyurethane. I accomplished the same thing on some stairs in another apartment with one coat of oil-based polyurethane floor paint.

Not to say that this product isn't a good one, but don't necessarily believe the hype that nothing else will work. --192.182.xx.xx

Hi Hollis,

I also read this on their website. I used some other products on a floor where there was dog urine and then put poly over the floors. When standing up and walking around you could not smell the urine but if I put my nose down on floor where the urine was I could detect the smell. On your recommendation I will be buying some of the SCOE 10X. Thanks. --12.47.xx.xx

Hi There,

I would really appreciate some urgent advise..

I have just purchased an old house and the floors in my main bedroom has wood borer damage and the floor cannot be refurbished, I will have to replace the entire floor with the original oregan pine wood. A temporary option would be to laminate, which is much cheaper. I really cannot afford to replace with original wood at this stage. I have just fumigated the wooden floors for borer, etc. I have also treated a termite nest, etc in the crawl space, which is near my bedroom. I am getting an old woody odour, which makes me sick as I have allergies in the main bedroom. I am convinced that the smell is coming from the wood borer damaged flooring. Will laying a good quality underlay and laminate block out the odor coming from the original wooden flooring? Is there something else I can lay over the subfloor to seal it before we lay the laminate.

I just want to block out that smell.

I look forward to your response.

Many thanks,

Alicia --154.69.xxx.xxx

Luan is very absorbant. In time the luan will soak up the odor, bringing it to the surface.

Momma picks the house and jer nose is working overtime when viewing a property.

Sealing takes time, energy, and money yet runs the risk of the odor returning. Humid Indiana summers bring out EVERY odor. Simplest is to eliminate the odor and be done. Usually as basic as clean and spray. Let the chemical do the work.

We've had great success with OdorXit.

I had success washing a subfloor with bleach and water (multiple times), then 2 coats of zinsser bin, then top coat of thick paint made for concrete that I had left over from another job. Also, had good luck with that urine eater stuff sold at pet stores without having to pull out carpet. --24.147.xx.xxx

I had a tenant take in a stray cat and it used the concrete basement floor as a litter box. I tried pressure washing, scrubbing with cleanser with chlorine in it, scrubbing with vinegar and lemon. Some success but on damp rainy days the smell still came up. Finally, painted the floor with oil based paint. Problem solved. --69.248.xx.xx

Jon Sully - By porous tile do you mean a granite or stone? If so I think the only thing that will work is ripping it out. You could try the odor Xit mentioned above. It might work, but you’d really have to saturate I think. --70.20.xx.xxx

To get rid of the cat pee smell in the bathroom I was pouring a vinegar, Odorxit concentrate and about five more different products from the pet store.

Eventually all tiles was ripped off. Then was a subfloor time to go. Decided not to tearing up the beams, but put a Red Guard on a new subfloor. Then put back the tiles. --74.90.xx.xx

I recently moved into a house that had multiple cats at one time or another and it seems like they used the corner of the dining room as a litter box. I completely tore out the floor and painted the floor joists with kilz then put down plastic then new subfloor and then synthetic felt then the vinyl flooring. I used 4 gallons of kilz on the walls around that area and I am still able to smell the cat urine smell. Someone told me to use marine polyurethane and that will cover it up and I won't smell it anymore. Can someone please help me get this smell gone? Thank you --68.58.xx.xx
