A clarification to Gail's post: Red is for the trim, black is for the ceiling. Seriously though, I go with light, neutral colors with bright white trim and doors. I use off white on the trim when the trim is painted (I have learned to leave the wood trim alone). Behr's Antique Lace is what I chose for that. I go w/Antique White (off white) a contractor bucket (5 gals) here at Lowe's just cost me $53 for the flat, which I like because it does a great job hiding little defects. I don't do the whole house w/the off white, I also use a sage green in the kitchen. I like high gloss in the kitchen as it's easy to clean and holds up well. Remember that a paint w/color will be more per can, so using the same color (i.e. in the kitchen and upstairs hallway) will save you $$, and still break up the rooms. I'm with you Brad...who wants a boring house? My favorite color is Behr swiss coffee mainly used in living room, dining room and hallway. I buy 5 gallon. All baseboards, molding, window seals, doors trimmed in Behr pure white. Then I buy the oops paints at any store. Saves me lots of money at $5-7 per one gallon can. $25-40 in 5 gallon. I look for sateen and semi gloss paints - no flats. Therefore, tenant can wipe down walls they even ask. If color isn't perfect, I adjust it. Paint makes a statement and people love it! I'm creative, paint one wall in a color and other three in swiss coffee. Make sure colors work. Ceiling is flat white ceiling paint.
