State Specific Question About: GEORGIA (GA)

I'm looking for a debt collection agency... I'm in Atlanta area but I'd assume that doesn't matter. I have a judgment on a former tenant for a few thousand dollars. Can anybody recommend a company that does small collections such as this. I really don't care what % fee they charge, but I want a firm that only charges if they are successful with the collection. Thanks for any tips! --66.96.x.xxx

Sarah. In the past i tried several collection agencies with dismal results Then I found that there are attorneys that specialize in collections and only charge a % of what they collect. The fella I use now has a reputation for being ruthless and i am happy with the results of his efforts . So if I were you I'd go the Atty route. Shop around till you find one that suites you . They'll come in handy now and in the future. --70.244.xxx.xx

Try the emergency contacts from the lease, sometimes they offer to help out the tenant who gets behind or give info where the tenant is working so you can go serve yourself. --76.241.xxx.xxx

This is actually a judgment from about 3 years ago. The judgment is good for atleast 4 years and has been collecting interest. When the tenant moved out he had recently got fired and there were lots of collection notices coming in the mail for him, so I decided to hold off and try to wait until he gets in a better financial situation so I could increase the chances of getting my money back. I'm no longer a landlord and am just looking to collect this and move on.

I would assume that an atty would charge me even if they aren't unsuccessful in collecting the debt, or am I wrong? --66.96.x.xxx

I was wondering the same thing Sarah. I have quite a few judgments myself that I'm holding on to. Let me know if you find a solution? I know that there are many landords here holding on to many judgments that are not collectible(no buyers). I'd be willing to sell mine at a reasonable price if you can find a buyer. --65.98.xxx.xx

There is no easy answer to your question: judgment is always the easy part collection is the hard part

In general third party agencies who purchase debt. grade landlord tenant debts as one of the lowest graded success rate on collections, then you add in the fact that majority of landlords its an one time transaction means your judgment in general is worth pennies on the dollar for resale

that said the majority of time success of collecting is not the agency but the entity the judgment is against, the best agency can not get blood from a stone for those defendants the law calls judgment proof and you will never collect absent the entity inheriting or winning the lotto

if the tenant has a steady job and the state where the tenant holds the job allows garnishment then you can get some return on your judgment --69.248.xx.xxx

I am in the same boat... I have been considering using Rent Recovery Service. Has anyone used this group?? Also, I think you can docket your judgment and extend the length of time you have to collect. --72.84.xxx.xxx
