Call the town's tax office and ask for the name and address of the owner. Then you ask him for ID and see if it matches.
With so many homes in foreclosure it might be hard to determine if a bank or a person owns a home.
Do you have a real estate agent working with you? I mostly dislike to work with them but at this time it might be a good idea. --76.99.xxx.xx |

In many counties you can go to the clerk's office site online and get that info as well. --76.222.xx.xxx |

As Sue said, depending on the county, you should be able to go to the county's web site and do a search of the tax records by address. --68.91.xxx.xxx |

Do you want to know because you want to know if it is a scam? Or do you just want to know because you want to know if he is the owner or a property manager?

i wouldn't be offended if someone asked - it hasn't happened yet. I say who I am and want to know who they are, including photocopying their IDs etc.
The s.d. is staying with the property, or else it would be a crime. It gets accounted for seperately in escrow.
Make out a seperate check for the s.d. And go for the house if you like it. The best deals won't be around long... --85.177.xxx.xxx |

The courthouse will have the info but most all counties have the info online and you can look it up yourself. Google "(county you are in) county tax parcel".
I have found a few counties that have limited access to the information unless you go to the courthouse and there they have public terminals (or you ask somebody). I think that is to keep people for accross the country from looking up the information.
