I just finished up a two month remodel of a previous cockroach infested apartment. The infestation was knocked out entirely with Maxforce Gel (Thank you Bugspray.net). The problem area was the kitchen. The smell emanating from the old cabinets and light and outlet receptacles was bad. I painted the inside of the cabinets, and sealed with caulk all of the gaps inside of the cabinets. The roaches were using the wall mounted wire moulding as refuge. I had to remove all of the switches and receptacles, and replace, and also i had to remove all of the boxes, wash the sputum (cockroach vomit and feces) off and spray paint them before replacing them. The entire unit was also repainted with an airless sprayer. I just thought I'd share this, I had no idea of the odor caused from the cockroach droppings. BTW, it made for an interesting dinnertime discussion. And the kitchen still smells. I will wait for the next vacancy and completely demolish the old cabinets.

Yeah it's bad. We have one house where we tried to get the smell out by removing everything but drywall and repainting everything, and the smell is still there. I have basically given up, it is sitting vacant. One day, I will get the motivation to go over there and attack it with a new strategy. For anyone buying a roach house - don't. Or treat it like a gut rehab. --216.251.xxx.xxx

ewwweeeuu that smell....

I knocked out the stench with oil based kilz primer and oil based high gloss paint On the walls. The cabinets I used a scrub brush and full strength Lysol and rinsed with HOT HOT water. Rinse repeat 2 times. --66.214.x.xx

Maxforce works believe it! With a empty unit 45 days applying 3 times and your roach problem is gone. --66.214.x.xx

when my husband poly's hardwood floors, that seems to get rid of the smell! I completely understand though, we plugged in a refrigerator(really nice side-by-side) and it REEKED!! so out the door it went...i would also say that he had to kilz some things and that helped too.. --74.240.x.xxx

I've had the same problem with cabinets and painting them with oil-based Kilz took care of the problem. We also replaced all casing/baseboards, light switches/outlets, outlet covers, and light fixtures. Until you've smelled 'roach', it's hard to believe that they actually have an odor. However, I'd recognize that smell anywhere...ewwww! --170.29.x.xx

I guess I have never smelled that but I can guess it's not something I'd want to smell. I didn't know they vomited. --12.77.xx.xx

My first husband's apartment had them. When we left they came along to our new home.

One time I made Rice a Roni. Hubby looked at it and asked what those things were that looked like onions. I said they are onions.

Well, they were cooked roach egg cases. I don't think we ate them.

We had the house sprayed and eventually sold it due to divorce.

Hubby ate out almost every meal and so did I after that. --76.99.xxx.xx

I agree with the Kilz Primer - OIL Based! Had to Kilz floor joists from cat urine soaked through the carpet (replaced), pad (replaced), 5/8" plywood subfloor (de-laminated from urea soaking, removed & replaced) then primered through the hole in the floor while standing in the crawlspace!! 4-year wonderful (vetinarian) tenant lost her entire deposit from the one spot her cats called 'potty'.

Fortunately my carpet guy knew Kilz - now I do too! --136.182.x.xx

Take a few boxes of moth balls. Open the boxes and sit them in the cabinets. Let them sit there for awhile. Could be a few days or longers (weeks).

I did this in my OLD homes. The smell is gone.

I did this in my smoke ruined home and it got rid of the smell.

I've used it to get rid of the smell of a dead animal in a crawl space. The smell is gone.

I swear by those little guys!!! Now if they will work on the unwelcome solicitors. --66.81.xx.xx
