What are my responsibilities to notify tenants when a sex offender lives in the neighborhod? Within a mile? Within a few miles? Also, do I have any liability to the neighborhood if I rent to someone on the sex offender registry?

I have a criteria that the applicant cannot be a criminal, so I would not rent to them.

I'm not sure what the laws are about you notifying your tenants about someone in particular, but you can refer them to megans list. --167.6.xxx.xx

You don't have to notify anyone about who you are renting to.

Liable for what? --209.68.xxx.xxx

My criteria also denies all violent and/or sex offenders, so for me it's a non-issue. If you choose to rent to one, you probably have no legal obligation. Moral is another thing entirely...but that's why I don't rent to them.

If you get word that a sex offender just moves into the neighborhood, be very cautious if you choose to inform anyone. Even the public databases have been wrong on occasion and peoples careers and lives have been utterly ruined by a false rumor that spreads. Seems like even the post-rumor damange control does no good. Once labeled the person has to leave town or at least the neighborhood. I wouldn't tell anyone anything unless the person came up to me and said, "Hi I'm Joe and I'm a registered sex offender...know where any of the kiddies like to hang out after school?"

Are you stupid or what? Your rental has neighbors who will not appreciate your liberal forgive all past sins attitude. I'm not one of those neighbors and I don't appreciate the tenor of your question. --69.133.xxx.xxx

Vince, not everyone on the sex offender list is a rapist. Check the list to see what they have done. You can urinate outdoors and be on the list. --71.87.xxx.xx

I have a neighbor who is a sex offender. He's been having young people over and they hang out in a camper in the back yard (open to my parking lot).

I wonder if he has someone tied up in there. --76.115.xx.xxx
