This isn't the time of year when landlords want to fire a tenant, but that dude needs to go bye-bye.
You didn't mention a lease, so I'm assuming this is a M2M tenant. If so, serve a 28-Day Notice to Vacate before Thursday. Do not, I repeat, do not give a reason for the notice. You are not required to a give reason for serving a 28-Day notice and doing so would give the tenant ammunition for a lawsuit.
If he pushes for a reason, simply tell him that you want your apartment back and stick to that. Don't say that you have family/friends that want to move into the unit. If you say that and family/friends don't actually move in, the tenant, again, has ammunition for a lawsuit.
If there is a lease, create a new thread saying the same thing and adding info about the lease to get advice on how to get rid of him. It's much harder to fire a leased tenant for an issue such as yours .
