Coin-Op Washer Repair (by GKARL [PA]) May 20, 2026 8:07 PM

I had a lid switch I needed to replace on a coin operated washer. (I have Kenmore coin operated washers and dryers which I bought used 10 years ago from another LL. These have extremely high durability which is why I opt to repair.). I had Sears come out and confirm the diagnosis, but they were wanting to charge nearly $ 400 to repair. I had ordered these same parts for two other washers but hadn't gotten around the repairing them. I have a guy who repairs appliances, but he does work on coin operating machines. It's not clear why as they're not much different than regular machines. So. I'm stuck with using Sears or doing it myself.

Youtube video was straight forward but I encountered immediate problems with getting the cabinet bracket off under the coin box due to tight access. I didn't have the proper tool which was a long handle screwdriver. Very frustrating and I wasted a bunch of time trying to get that bracket off. Once I figured out the correct tool, the job was done in 20 minutes. Before that, I was regretting not just paying Sears to get it done. That's how the learning curve is though. Now that I know, the remaining ones will get repaired in short order.

I got a feeling of accomplishment today after initial frustration. I like to have coin-ops as they generally produce a few extra bucks with minimal effort.

So you bought the part, probably cheaper than they charged, and you bought a screwdriver. Then you wasted maybe what, an hour with the learning?

Subtract that from the $400 service call and take yourself out to dinner on the company.

Taking the tools out of the truck is great, until it doesn't make sense. --47.227.xx.xxx

Zero, that's about right. I wasted an hour with that bracket. You're right, that's cheap tuition. The actual part cost me $ 10 and I bought two long handled screwdrivers and some WD 40 for another $ 10. Job cost me $20 plus frustration. --23.28.x.xxx
