Hello. I am not an CPA but I overheard my electrician speaking to someone he was working with. The guy mentioned needing to reduce his payment by 25% so he could pay taxes on his work. He ended by saying he would receive a 1099. I told him to check into this because why is he reducing his pay for taxes when he is issuing him a 1099. Am I wrong? Any suggestions? I just give 1099s and let them handle their tax issues. Thanks --76.36.xx.xxx |

A 1099 for 2025 work was due NLT 31 January 2006 without penalty. That limit was anyone who got paid more than $599.99
In 2026, the new limit is for anyone who gets paid more than $2,499.99 --174.131.xxx.xxx |

There’s a lot of guesswork between the trades guys on how these things work. I wouldn’t worry about it too much if they’re right or wrong. --24.152.xxx.xx |

Ray, according to the government's website, the 2026 threshhold for the 1099 is $2,000.00.

Sounds like an old friend of mine who worked on the Wildwood boardwalk one summer. The boss paid in cash, but reduced employees' pay to "withhold taxes" for them. Har! --50.230.xxx.xxx |

The only circumstance I can think of is if the payor has issued a 1099 to the payee in the past and subsequently received notification from the IRS that backup withholding was required. --68.1.xxx.xxx |

OK. If you are a subcontractor and you expect to receive a 1099 at the end of the year, you need to give your contractor a form W-9 which gives him your name, address and SS number.
If you refuse to give him this info, He is supposed to withhold 30% from your pay and indicate the amount on your 1099. The contractor then remits this withholding to the IRS,
I've never heard about anyone requesting that his contractor withhold taxes voluntarily But I suppose it's possible. --98.193.xxx.xx |
