Do they help? I work hard to kill them by hand, anything that helps is worth it.

I made up a piece of a wooden 2 x 4 plank "holder" for a plastic water bottle. The bees walk through a tunnel that I drilled and fall into the plastic bottle. I found a video from youtube. It works. The dead ones seem to leave a scent and other ones come in and are trapped. I have noticed a big difference in 2-3 years. --76.242.xx.xxx |

Have a trap and it attracts only a couple of them any given year. I don't know if you need to bait them or what --24.101.xxx.xxx |

They seem to be bad this year. Does wasp spray work? Coat the wood in it? --65.188.xxx.xxx |

Somewhat. They are easy to make.
I try to talk to them and tell them to go into the nice home that I made for them but they don't always listen. --76.129.xxx.xx |

DonV,
My store bought carpenter bee traps snagged many.
Also, Bugspray.com advises to NOT fill their holes with caulk but to dust them with special powder, allow them to leave before caulking.

What works for me for wood already in place:
1. Two coats of paint. Make sure first coat is dry.
2. Two coats of brush on used or unused motor oil. Wait at
least a week between coats.
3. Nail on rough surface no-slip strips, sandpaper, aluminum
foil (in theory double stick duct tape should work but I
have not tried it, or shingle remnants.
For wood not in place yet, all of the above or sprinkle fine sand on fresh paint. After paint drys, paint over the paint/sand mixture. Some sand will fall off, but much of it will remain.
For holes in wood use diatomaceous earth in a duster and spray into said holes. Have had good luck with liquid insecticide, just be sure it will kill carpenter bees--wasp spray does not.
For taking out frustration on them use an old tennis racquet. --75.107.xxx.xxx |

We have a ton of carpenter bees at our property in Georgia. Carpenter bee traps absolutely work.
Now if someone has a solution for woodpeckers. They are big problem. --24.236.xx.xx |

I use spray for them. It works wonders as long as you get the right stuff. I have tennis and badminton rackets at the barn, storage house and my own garage.
The traps work. I would place them away from the structure after you get a few. Kind of like when you get a bug zapper. It is best to give it to the neighbor so they aren't attracted to it at your place.
The best thing I have found to thwart them is to wrap the wood in aluminum or vinyl. They won't bore thru the covering and it makes the place more maintenance free. --107.147.xx.xx |

I saw this on the internet and am going to try it.
Mix 3 parts water with 1 part boric acid in a spray bottle and spray inside the entrance hole. This is very poisonous to the carpenter bees and will exterminate them within an hour. --65.188.xxx.xxx |

I didn't look anything up but wonder if borax cleaner mixed will do the same thing?
I have a couple boxes of that for some reason and never use it. --107.147.xx.xx |

Lisa, I have seen it suggested to plant berry producing shrubs like spicebush, viburnum, dogwoods at the outer edges of the property to attract woodpeckers away from the house.
We get some drumming over our bedroom in the spring, and on a sleep-in Saturday, its annoying. --172.59.xx.xx |
