A new law proposed in GA addresses the police assertion that squatting is a civil matter. It will make squatting a misdemeanor. According to the article I read "Under the new law, potential squatters will have to present a verifiable lease agreement or be charged and face criminal penalties. They may also be required to pay back rent for the time they inhabited the living space." Apparently it is on the Governor's desk for signature.
I know CA initiated a new law in January that allows an owner to provide the police a letter ahead of time that allows them to remove squatters for 30 days.
It's crazy to me that police need these tools. In my younger days, this would have been called B&E (breaking and entering), and they probably would have gotten a criminal trespass charge as well. My how times have changed. Police are apprehensive to enforce the laws because of all the negative press the last decade or two.
Will new laws fix this problem? --209.205.xxx.xx |

If another piece of paper is what they need. More paper laws for every state. --172.59.xxx.xx |

We’re past the point of them solving problems with more laws. --24.152.xxx.xx |

I hear ya NE (PA). Those issues are solved internally. This county has one of the highest per capita of guns and pickup trucks. You just do have squatter issues in this county (or not for very long). --65.188.xxx.xxx |

The bigger picture is criminals can stay holed up as there is no identity check here. Places that prevented stores from taking action on shop lifters where the stores closed down then some areas that part of town is dying. If someone breaks into a vehicle more then likely they would charged and possibly arrested. First criminal offence then arrested. As long as criminals will get bail or not be prosecuted then crime will continue. Once they are able to enforce property rights then criminals will not be able to be holed up there. The illegal drug trade will end as well as there will not be grow up in house. --207.236.xxx.xxx |
