We are going to be replacing the deck at our primary residence and are considering Fiberon composite decking. Tired of the maintenance of a wood deck. Has anyone had experience with this brand. Any insight would be appreciated. --68.14.xx.xxx

I do not however if this is a synthetic product the spacing below needs to be max of 12inches, using wood the spacing is 16 inches so you will need to calculate the replacement of the support structure into the cost. --76.188.xxx.xxx

Some special types of decking or fencing or siding are better than others, BUT all have one common problem.

Over time, dust settles on them. Mildew, etc grows on the dust. Then they must be cleaned. Wood and some other types eventually need touch up or refinishing.

The idea of a completely maintenance free deck, siding, fencing, etc is an advertising gimmick.

They all need periodic maintenance.

Most of the composite decking available now is much better than the first few generations of it. I personally prefer the square edge Azec decking installed with Cortex screws & matching plugs. You can get it in the common 5 1/2" width or if you want to simulate old style 1x3 fir decking it also comes in 3 1/2" widths. As Vee said all of the synthetic deckings require 12" oc framing.

I have grey 5 1/2" wide slate grey Trex installed with matching Cortex screws 2 of the 3 decks at my own house. The other deck has the same square edge decking installed with TrapEase 3 deck screw without the plugs. IMO & everyone who sees them the 2 with matching plugs look 1000 % better.

Other than washing off pine sap & dirt once a year, there really isn't any maintenance required. If you have a grill on the deck it's a good idea to use a grilling mat under it to lessen the chance of grease stains. --71.174.xxx.xx

If you currently have a wood deck with joists spaced @ 16, I would just put another joist centered between each one. Rather than reframing everything. Better than the minimum required - it's your deck, make it nice and strong. That composite stuff can really get wavy over the years if not well supported. Also, I believe it would be easier than to totally re-frame it. --64.246.xxx.xx

I used Trex on a deck and some stairs. You know the great part - nearly indestructible. Only a few negatives. It gets very hot in the sun so you can't go barefoot on it in the summer. It does not shrink with temperature (or less than wood) so the installer butted the boards up against each other. That is a problem. Water still needs to drain so space like normal. --65.188.xxx.xxx

Cheryl,

I have not used that brand. MY preference is the Z shaped bracket that holds down each board without the use of screws breaking the surface. Nothing see and nothing crack or pop.

The contractor who built my brother's deck tightened each screw a skosh too tight (to bury the head) so every screw has tiny cracked pieces which hurt bare feet and visually ruin the effect of the nice clean faux wood.
