Dishwasher Pods (by Deanna [TX]) Jul 2, 2020 3:47 PM

Weird question.

So, in our personal house, our 90's dishwasher was at the end of its life, and we replaced it with a mid-range LG model two Thanksgivings ago. I'm not really fond of it-- but that's another issue.

It recommended using dishwasher pods. I've never used dishwasher pods, and I don't know anything about dishwasher pods, so I kept on using my Palmolive Eco dishwasher gel that I've always used, and things seemed to be okay.

However, I noticed I was getting some residue on the filter, and I pulled it out to rinse it off--- and I found that it was clogged full of this weird, gummy, sticky gunk. I didn't think it was grease, but I put it in an ammonia soak anyways--- it didn't do a thing. I soaked it in boiling water-- it didn't do anything, either. I let it be exposed to air, and then scraped it with a skewer as clean as I could get it, and that kind of helped, but not like I wanted. I eventually called on my plumbers to help me, and between hydrochloric acid and a high-pressure hose, they were able to get it nice.

So, now I guess they're serious when they say "use dishwasher pods." I'm not using dishwasher gel anymore.

Does anyone have a recommendation for dishwasher pods that get things clean and are relatively economical?

TIA!

Can't help you there, I wash my dishes by hand and I have a Kitchen Aid dishwasher LOL. What is even funnier is that my tenants do the same.

A while back people were having problems with the detergent pods.

Something about the pod needing a certain temp to stay liquid and they were congealing in the drain pipes causing clogs.

Not much help for your situation but thought I would put it out there for general info. --137.119.xxx.xx

my two year old-ish dishwasher came with instructions (and a free sample !!) of Cascade pods. So that's what I use but like above, I still wash by hand. I run the dishwasher the first weekend of every month so everything keeps flowing through.

Side point for anyone needing a new personal dishwasher. Get a quiet one - not sure any more of the decibel levels - it is totally worth the extra cost. --72.70.xxx.xxx

New dishwashers use 15 litres of water for the entire cycle where the dishwasher runs longer. Found can buy a higher acidic concentration of vinegar where can run a couple cups during the cycle. Most stores it is cleaning vinegar which after cycle will dissolve build up. Hard water can also cause problems as well. I use powder in Bosch dishwasher where only require low concentrations is required where so far the filter is cleaned once in while. Older Bosch ran for about 45 minutes where water use was much higher. Also can buy a dishwasher cleaning bottle where never used. It can be used. Vinegar seems to work well. --147.194.xxx.xx

Like Nicole my new DW came with sample Cascade pods. The instruction manual was very specific as to the type/make-up of the pods if not the sample. --173.31.xxx.xxx

Costco's house brand of dishwasher pods work well.

I'll use Quantum Finish if I can get it on sale.

As for dishwasher cleaner, I can't remember the brand, but you have to put the entire bottle into the dishwasher and you have to run it separate on the sanitize cycle and that's a good one.

The ones where you just add it to a regular cycle along with your dishes don't work well. --98.146.xxx.xxx

I bought a Bosch 500 Series AutoAir 44-Decibel Top Control 24-in Built-In Dishwasher for my own house. It does a very good job at cleaning the dishes. I just use the liquid stuff - Cascade or the generic equivalents. I don't pre-clean or rinse the dishes. It gets baked on cheese off the plates. It has a skinny 3rd rack which has actually come in handy during the holidays to put all the silverwear

Complaints, if you can call them that, is it is really quiet so I can't tell you how many times I have opened the unit while it is running. The only exterior indication that it is on is a little red light that shines on the floor. All the controls are on the door edge which is hidden under the counter top when the door is closed. I am sure it is a "feature" to have a smooth SS surface but it is a bit annoying when you want to push the buttons or see if it is on.

The other annoying thing is that it seems to take all day to clean the dishes. I have never timed it per se but I am talking about 3 hours or more. In reality it isn't an issue as it is just me and the wife but if you have a large family you would be hard pressed to be able to run it twice a day. --65.188.xxx.xxx

We use Cascade Complete Actionpacs pods, and we run our dishwasher at least once a day. Last week we had to have a video inspection of our sewer lateral as part of applying for a permit, and my husband commented on how clean the line looks and thought it might be so clean because the pods are such strong stuff. He formerly had to root out grease from our sewer lateral once every year or so and hasn't had to do it since we switched to pods. They're also easier to use than liquid or powdered dishwasher soap.

I also switched to pods for our laundry soap and like them better too. --73.231.xxx.xxx

To Bonanza [NC]:

The newer dishwashers use less water (more economical) but compensate with longer wash times.

Bosh are one of the top models, most efficient. On mine, I found the regular cycle was overkill. Everything gets cleaned on the delicate cycle, 1.5 hrs. Try the delicate cycle as an experiment and see if that gets it clean, works for me! --97.126.xx.xx

Think about all the plastic from those pods that didn't get stuck to the screen? Maybe it's flavored? Plastic..
