OT: Hurricane Dorian (by J [FL]) Sep 1, 2019 12:38 PM
Message:

Is anyone else here in the path of this thing?

It's been chaos here for days. No gas at half the stations and lines at places that do. Someone broke into the John Deere store near me and stole generators.

SUPPOSEDLY it's not likely to hit Florida now but the predictions have been changing so much I don't know what to believe at this point. --72.188.xxx.xxx

Was just thinking about you. What city are you in? The weather forecaster on Fox just said that they really don't know where it's going since the models have been varying so much. My tenant's children and grandchildren are down there in Orlando seeing a very ill grandmother and are supposed to leave tonight. She is ambulatory and it seems like they should get her out of there with them. Hurricane Sandy years ago, took a hard left turn when it hit a high pressure area and came in right here. Nothing like that in the forecast today, thankfully. I would not want to be anywhere near that rain and wind from a Category 5 which it is now. Any thoughts of heading for Miami which seems now not to be a target?

If you have a top load washer then be sure to run a cycle without soap to clean it out and then fill it with water and stop it mid cycle. Makes a nice water storage temporarily if needed. --108.69.xxx.xxx

Now they are saying Outer Banks watch out :(

If it's anything above a Cat 1, I'm outta here. I stayed through the direct hit of Matthew and the house felt like it was going to take off and winds were NOTHING like predicted with this one. Our house is built like a sail anyway (a big Aframe) and nothing to block the wind as we are right on the water. DH won't like it but we'll go to Richmond with the cats and bunk with our kids. --50.82.xxx.xx

Here in north Florida it is beautiful today. Have had bouts of the humidity coming and going. Walk outside to fix a spigot and sweat is pouring down your face and body. This is truly a bad storm. We have had 2 bad one in the past 3 years. Hunker down with lots of beer and positive thoughts and hope it skirts the east coast.

We don't even bother to board up anymore. What's a board going to do against a Cat 5 hurricane?

A joke from FB:

What do a tornado, a hurricane and a redneck divorce have in common?

Somebody is losing a F**** trailer! --50.82.xxx.xx

Even without a direct hit of the eye over land, this is a massive storm that will cause a lot of trouble.

Here in southeastern VA, we can be helped some by the way N. Carolina sticks out and deflects or weakens storms before they hit us.

Sorry, WMH. LOL - good one!

I expect to stick around unless it will be Cat 3 or more hitting us. My house "shouldn't" flood in Cat 2.

DJ, have you been through a true category anything storm? Just wondering.

We've been through many hurricanes. Dozens...but they all fall back just before they hit to a Tropical Storm. Fine.

Except for the ones who don't...those are terrifying. Even a Cat 1 is not to be taken lightly. --50.82.xxx.xx

They showed water in the streets already due to King Tide which is moon perigee, closer to earth in it's orbit and also it is New Moon, so the moon is travelling right with the sun to add to it's gravitational pull. I wonder if that gravitational pull is like a big spoon stirring the pot into whorls like that hurricane?. --173.61.xxx.xx

It's always like that in FL. That's why I lived on a boat. Easy to just move out of the way if you do it early. Plus we had our own power, water, etc.

If you are inland a few miles and not on low ground, and you have a poured block house with a roof bolted on, (not hurricaine straps) with the sub roof screwed down and metal shutters. You can probably withstand a Cat 4 without much damage. I've never seen a Cat 5. I left after Andrew in 91 or whenever it was.

I drove from Key West to Key Largo once in a Cat 1 storm. A gust blew my truck from one lane clear into the other lane on the 7 mile bridge. Nothing I could do but hang on and hope it didn't blow us off the bridge.

Amazing that I survived my youth. LOL --47.216.xx.xxx

Not more than a Cat 1 , personally.

Watching the forecast now - may "only" be Cat 2 for NC / VA.

Still, I'm prepared.

They are forecasting it will reach SC on Thursday so everyone has to secure outdoor stuff: patio furniture, grills, bicycles, trashcans to prevent them from getting caught up in the winds. --71.219.xx.xx

Amy, where are you in North Florida? I sold my folk's place in Flagler Beach after they died, but still worry about their friends and former neighbors with each new storm.

Well we are very lucky the hurricane has been down graded to much smaller winds when it passes us. We are hearing the Bahamas is devastated and the people that weathered the storm need to be rescued. I can hardly believe people stayed there knowing category 4 was coming. Wilma I live close to Jacksonville and am a native. Your parents lived in Flager county which is still a very quaint place. If you had a chance to keep their place it would always be a prime piece of real estate.
