It seems the in order to stay in power for another year the federal Liberals made a deal with the leftist New Democratic Party to redistribute money to those at the lower level. The capital gains is changing from 50 per cent to 67 per cent which is going to hit hard on those who rentals, houses that rent, cottages and investments over $250,000 Cdn dollars. If the socialist with draw support there will be a election. So in the end there is going to be a Progressive Conservative majority government at the federal level like Doug Ford in the province of Ontario. Those income supplements did not work in Sweden, Norway or Finland where it supposed to help start a business where at best 5 per cent did then the rest stayed on social assistance. There are those who chose not better themselves by staying in poverty by not doing anything. They just eat, sleep and what ever. Contribute absolutely nothing to economy where in the end less economic activity than less tax revenue. The carbon tax on gasoline, diesel, oil, natural gas is going to cause inflation from the farm to the grocery store and everything else. Rich that anyone who has business with income is rich. I can see the Federal Liberals dropping in polls again. Most feel there should be election right now. A lot feel this is socialist country where many provinces have a progressive Conservative government. The age group from 20 to 45 will be not voting for the federal Liberals. Having a majority government is where they pass legislation without the other leftist parties. The way the progressive Conservative work is look to save a dollar then reinvest in the economy where more public transit, better roads, better health care.. I see that happen in the province of Ontario along with less taxes like licensing fee for renewing vehicles, less gasoline tax. Last provincial election the leader of provincial Liberals did not even win a seat where went to be a mayor. It is pretty bad when a leader of a party does not even his seat. --207.236.xxx.xxx

You pay 50% on capital gains and it is going up to 67%?

Some of the things you talk about makes it seem that Canada is trying to become like CA and NY.

Ouch for sure. Sorry to hear all the problems you are having with your gov. --107.147.xx.xx

This is an increase from 50% to 67% for capital gains over $250,000 per year. A quick check shows that is 0.13% of Canadians that will pay more from this change.

So, yes, if you are in the top 0.13% of Canadians when it comes to capital gains in a year -- then you might have to pay a little more for gains over $250,000.

Note that there is already an exception in place for up to $1,000,000 if you sell a business in a year. So even those people -- who sell a business and make over $250,000 -- will NOT pay more with this change.

This is affecting a very small, top-of-the-heap group. Just to add some clarity here. --75.128.xxx.xxx

The federal Liberals said that is going to be the same as California. That is why business is leaving to go to other states along with jobs as well. You will never take those out of poverty who have no ambition but to collect social assistance. When it comes to vote they generally do not vote only a small number vote. In the meantime Until October 2025 the Federal Liberals will be support the leftist Socialist Democratic members. The leader will get a pension in October 2025. Some will go to other countries where the tax system favours job growth and opportunity. This change in capital gains is going to have negative impact on rental housing providers where the shortage of rental housing will only get worse. The super rich have off shore investments like the kings and queens. In the past many provinces have voted for the Socialist Democratic where only last four years then voted as the economy goes down not up. I personally only vote for the Progressive Conservative party in provincial and federal elections as the economy always improves with the common sense approach. More than likely it will another 8 years of a federal progressive Conservative government after October 2025. --207.236.xxx.xxx

Just heard on news today that capital gains is going to effect doctors where that is going to discourage doctors from practicing here. As medical clinic sold will be subject to 2/3 capital gains where when doctors want to retire the government is going to hand in pockets. What the federal Liberals will do to appease the leftist Socialist Democratic party who keeps them in power. Next election those two political parties will be reduced possibly to point where they will not enough seats to be gain opposition like what happened to the provincial Liberals in Ontario. A quick action without any thought to the consequences. I never voted for Liberals in provincial or federal elections. They are going to going off a cliff. --207.236.xxx.xxx

Robert: Have you read the law at all? As I said above, this is a change from 50% to 67% on capital gains over $250,000 per year and affects only the top 0.13% of Canadian capital gains earners.

And there is already a $1,000,000 exception carved out for people selling a business in a single year -- such as the doctors you mention.

This is yet another example of the rich (again, the top 0.13%) getting everyone else to complain about how this is hurting them.

I call bull. --107.181.xxx.x

Here doctors have corporation where that does not apply. There are not any properties or houses less then a $250,000 dollars Cdn here if that is rental property. Here many will be selling out before the June deadline then more then likely investing outside Canada. Here most of rich have off shore investments like Cayman Island, Panama, Switzerland where taxable is not reported. There is absolutely no to change the capital gains to match California. In 2025 of October there is going to be a election here where the Federal Liberals and the Socialist New Democratic are out. Where the carbon tax is gone. The house I live is approaching $800,000 dollars where would never convert to a rental house. The carbon tax will not produce any results as when I add how much was spent last year and getting $560 on natural gas alone excluding how much is paid for gasoline. I am using a wood stove where the wood is free. Last year paid $22,000 dollars in capital gains when transferred to personal where there was no exception. That was less then a million. After the progressive Conservatives win with a majority there is be going to a common sense approach to crime and the carbon tax. I took eight large bags of fiber glass insulation to the transfer station which is going to Ann Arbor Michigan where Canadian dumps will not accept. The house retrofits will not fund spray foam where I will get rid all the moldy insulation. If they think people are stupid then they wind what happened to provincial Liberals in Ontario where the leader did not even win a seat. --207.236.xxx.xxx

My sister and her idiot husband have burned wood for decades. Always claimed it was free. Always complained about the labor involved and the maintenance on the saws, splitters, haulers and such.

Wood might be cheaper, but it is most definitely not free.

Growing up we heated solely with wood. I made a promise to myself never to rely on that as my only heat source.

At the hardware store the pallets are free where use two pallets every night. As the insulation of the house is improved by installing more spray foam there is less need for heat. Three years had a newer Lennox high efficiency two stage gas furnace installed where the previous high efficiency furnace was too noisy. As insulation is improved with spray foam it takes longer for. one degree Celsius temperature drop along with do AC where it is hot for three hours than open windows where at night use ceiling fans. A metal roof with rigid vent does not absorb like asphalt shingles. Sometimes unable to get wood where use furnace. Wood is supplement to existing heat where object to paying the carbon tax on natural gas which is funding social programs. Last gas bill was around $65.00 where 17 per cent was the carbon tax. For people on the edge the carbon tax is causing energy poverty. To spend money on air sourced heat pump there are no savings for me. To install a ground sourced heat pump which works in cold climate that is going to cost around $35,000 dollars where will never break even in my lifetime. As the weather warms up going to remove the fiber glass insulation then use four cans of the DIY spray foam. Over time will completely get rid the moldy fiber glass insulation. The humidity of house is 31 per cent. --207.236.xxx.xxx
