Have you ever been summons & actually served on a jury? In yesterday's mail I received an "Official Summons for Juror Service".

Over the last 50 years, I've served on at least 10 juries & been the foreman on 3 of them. These trials lasted from 1 to 9 days with most lasting 2 days or less. With the exception of one that involved a disputed car repair bill, I felt that the others were worth the time & effort involved with serving.

I'm not sure about other state but I do know that in MA if you are over 70 (which I am) then you can decline to serve & even have your name permanently removed from the juror list. I haven't decided if I'm going to accept or decline this offer.

I'm curious as to what your thoughts are on being summoned to serve as a trial juror.

Last year I served on a jury and it will be my last. In a nutshell, some young guy would draw chalk obsenities on the street in from of the city council building and yell at people. Two older citizens wanted to clean up the sidwalks so the brought a power washer and started to clean them. The young guy would yell at them and call them every name in the book. some one called the cops and when he tried to interview the elderly couple, the guy would yell at the cop. He was arrested for hindering the cop from doing his job. What I thought would be a very quick verdict lasted 5 hours. One person on the jury said it was his free speech right to do this. The rest said guilty. The worst part is they took our phones away from us before deliberations and wouldn't give them back until we were done. I couldn't call my 70 year old wife I would be late. I even asked the baliff to call my wife but he did not.

As a result I am done being a juror. --98.34.xx.xxx

I have been called multiple times. I always went. Never served and was only asked questions once.

Was at the courthouse and heard a popping sound. I walked over to the window on the third (?) floor, looked down and saw a murder suicide that had just unfolded. We were all at the courthouse for a long time, just sitting there.

Next time I was called for service they had metal detectors.

If I am called again I will go and do my duty. I feel it is important to fill the position if possible instead of letting some deadbeat who wants the $11 per day check. (I never got paid either) --107.147.xx.xx

I have been on multiple jurries, city, county, and district court over the years. I consider it my duty, I have family that gave their life so that we could have freedom in this country. The least I can do is give a few days of my time every couple of years to support one little aspect of those freedoms, judicial process. I will keep doing it if I'm mentally and physically capable. Not everything is about making a buck, we have a civic responsibility that comes with our citizenship. Yes, we can mentally justify why it's not about our self-serving nature by pointing to pay, age, social status or many other points but those are very thin veils over an ugly truth: we are as susceptible to the 7 deadly sins today as when they were when written in 590 AD.

I feel the same way about voting. --209.205.xxx.xx

I was called up for jury duty many, many years ago. I served twice. Once on the municipal court and once on the common pleas court. Actually served on one case that was pretty silly, but it was still a great learning experience.

We were told that just being available to be selected for a jury caused many people to decide to settle which is why we didn't get to sit in on many cases.

Like MikeA, I will serve as long as I am mentally and physically able to do so. As others mentioned, with the liberal judges and people available from the public, hopefully, I would be able to be a rational person on a jury. Even though I am retired, this was my philosophy even before I retired. It is one way I can serve my civic duty. --99.165.xx.xxx

I've served twice. The first time was kind of upsetting. I was in summer school taking my capstone course for college. Because it was summer, we were moving about twice the pace of the regular semester. I asked to have it moved until after the course was over and I would be happy to serve. Of course, they said "school is not an excuse". So, I worked it out with the professor and he was aware. I got picked to be on the jury then.

During the voir dire portion, another one of my professors was picked as well and being questioned. The case was a burglary and theft case. They asked if anyone had anything stolen from them before. A few raised their hand, including me. I told them that when I was in high school, someone broke into my truck and stole my stereo (yea, I grew up in the phase where you could hear me driving down the road a couple blocks away). He asked if it would sway my decision on this case and I said I didn't think it would. Then, they ask if anyone had issues with since the case was even filed, the guy must be guilty. One of my other professors raised his hand and they asked him the same of do you think you can look at the facts and decide based on that. He replied he would certainly try. Judge instantly dismissed him. Pretty sure that was his plan to be dismissed. So meanwhile I'm working my rear off for a week staying up late and catching up on the classes that I missed. Seems fair (eye roll).

The other was a rape case. I HATED that one. 11 year old girl's mom was dating her mom. On multiple occasions, he got in her bed at night after mom fell asleep and did his thing. We found him guilty. Evidence was pretty clear. A lot of us were pretty sick to our stomach over that one. Thankfully this was before I had kids or I probably would have felt even sicker over this one. It was bad enough.

Got called another time, but wasn't picked. I'd serve if I was picked again. It is a bit of inconvenience, but I do see it as a duty. I would want some sanity on the jury if I was on the other side, so it's a pay it forward thing I guess. Of course, I doubt it's really a pay it forward thing since I don't plan on ever needing that. --45.17.xxx.xxx

I was one of the hold outs. They wanted DNA. to prove he was the meth maker or something. What? just he was in the right(wrong) place at the right(wrong) time! No DNA needed. Anyway, I was glad to serve, found it interesting, and wish I could've put the meth maker away. He later kicked the bucket in his 30's somehow so I guess he paid his dues ... --64.184.xx.xx

With that in mind, I think you would probably be a good person to have on a jury. Perhaps the courts fill the same way and thus have selected you several times. Besides, what else do you have to do.

I have never been on a jury, but I would do it for the experience. However, after that they may decide never to choose me again.

Also did i mention no one cares in the entire process, why not? because they are govt employees and guess what happens on friday whether i show up or not? they get paid, that is what happens on friday and that is the only thing they care about. --74.77.xx.xx

Called a few times, on case once and also Grand Jury. One was a woman whose boyfriend hit her and broke her nose. He came at her again. She shot him. He died. I fought for her. Why should she get hit again and maybe die from that. For a while in this state a woman could do that legally but they fixed it later. Grand Jury was similar. Woman was kidnapped and stabbed her some seventy times and raped her for many hours. She lived. The plumber knows her. She won't go out of the house. The DAs wanted to charge him with assault. So your friend here spoke up and the rest of the Grand Jury rose up also and he as charged with attempted murder. Trial didn't happen for a long time but he was put away. You can seriously help the climate in this country sometimes. Now they keep sending me cards. Over age 73 don't have to serve so I call them back and tell them about cancer treatment and incontinence and they take my name off the list. It was disgusting and dangerous around that courthouse. --173.61.xxx.xxx

My city spans two counties. I know the sheriff on the poor side of town pretty well as we had a working relationship when I had a W2 job. He would routinely get called by the county Judge's office to go out and round up jurror's. He would get a copy of those that were supposed to show up and he would send a couple of deputies out to collect them and take them to the county court. The old judge wasn't very patient, if they gave him guff when the deputy dropped them off he would issue them a $200 contempt of court fine. The sheriff told me on occasion that one would get to spend the night in jail if he really ticked off the Judge. So, don't be surprised if you get a personal invite from a deputy if you just blow it off and they can't fill the seats.

The whole jury process is terribly inefficient and a waste of valuable human resources. Around here, 250 people take a day off work and most of the time sit in a big holding room all day long doing nothing. Once in a.while they need a few dozen for a trial, but mostly everyone gets sent home around 2:00. These trials often take years to put together, but then they want a jury at the ready to start right away. I don’t get it. --108.52.xxx.xxx
