I know that there was a prior thread about work vehicles. I just bought a new vehicle. Got a little tired of the 13 MPG that my Tundra gets around town. Too often it is just a quick trip to look at something, no/few tools needed. Plus my goal is to be more like Brad 2000- hire it done.

Just got an e-bike with waterproof pannier & back bag. Gets about 40 miles per charge. Goes up to 28 mph. Still have to peddle, but makes it EASY even going up hills. Took me less than 2 minutes longer to get to an appointment yesterday than driving--6 miles from home... and I get some exercise. Used it 17 miles in total yesterday for rental stuff.

Now I have to contact IRS about the mileage rate. --76.138.xxx.xxx

Would a standard bicycle provide unlimited range, infinity MPG, and more exercise?

All funning aside, I like your concept. I would just count the milage the same. Let us know what you find out from the IRS.

6x6; yes a standard bike provides infinite range. Actually, my new e-bike has that too, just 40 + miles of assist. At 67, I find my desire to ride up the hills has diminished, as has my endurance. Found it way too easy to just drive the truck.

The e-bike has just made it much easier to do so that I (hopefully) don't just lazy out. There is a pretty good size hill to get to my home from all but one of my rentals.

RB; pretty good bike lanes here. Would you have said that if I said it was a motorbike? I road a 650 Yamaha for several years-- and had some close calls on it. --76.138.xxx.xxx

Tacoma is smaller along with uses less fuel as not as wide. The Nissan Frontier is also a good option newer with 9 speed automatic. If need more capacity then buy a trailer. While the New Tundra with the turbo charged engine uses less fuel would be reluctant to buy any turbo charged engine. Could also look at smaller SUV then use a trailer when required.

A van is another option where can also use a trailer when more capacity is required. Here a lot of pick up trucks 2 wheel drive is not available where on average 4 Wheel Drive adds about 100 to 120 kilograms of weight where gasoline is required. It is important to keep vehicle as light as possible as weight increases fuel consumption. This winter was very mild where for first time bought snow tires with aluminum rims. Middle of April going to switch to all seasons radial tires. If can drive a standard then a 4 cylinder pick up with 5 speed will use a lot less fuel. I remember before it was possible to buy a small pick up truck with diesel engine. Outside of US and Canada it is possible to buy Hilux Toyota pick up with a diesel engine which uses much less fuel along revs much lower at highway speeds. --207.236.xxx.xxx

Phil, yes.

Being a Senior Harley Rider myself, I feel safer on it,

than a bicycle.

Phil,

You give new meaning to the phrase "No tools in the truck!"

I physically jumped when I saw the word BIKE!

True, many trips are for small items, change locks, check on the painter, or just to take photos.

But I do think it's a great idea if you like it. Whatever floats your boat! FREEDOM!!! to run your business with your own personal likes.

Next question...do you still have hair to blow in the wind as you ride?

Over my 45 trek, I've gone from using a large trunk in a Dodge Dart, to a few F250 Pick Up Truck, then a B250 Van and finally a E350 Van. These were my job trucks with shelves, stock, inventory and tools. No cargo windows, sliding bars on the doors and a break peddle lock so it couldn't be stolen.

But living in Los Angeles, I would always get cut off. Once when driving my Ford F600 flat bed truck, I left enough room for stopping. But on the freeway cars were coming to a quick stop so the stupid jerks in the lanes to my left and right at the last minute did a no signal lane change so my stopping distance was cut short. From 5 car lengths down to nothing. I laid on my truck horn as my 19 Ton truck crushed the lane changers now in front of me. They all lied to the police and had phony witnesses. But I had several hidden dish cameras. Forward, both sides and rear. In my Jury trial for 1M in property damage and 10M in injury, I got to show the Jury my video. When I was on the stand the personal injury attorneys said, "So it's only your word against the 15 people injured and 30 other eyes witnesses. It's not like you have a video of the event". I replied, "even if I had one, you would never allow me to show it to the court". He said go ahead, and I did. Won the case any my insurance company made the all pay out for their lies and waste of court time.

So now, because of jerks trying to have accidents like break checking, I drive a modified smaller truck with a I-beam frame and reinforced bumpers. Tools boxes that sit below the truck bed level, and removable ladder racks.

I still have my E350 1 ton Van for larger remodels with a heavy duty towing hitch to tow my trailers, etc.

Great you got a new truck. I hope you make it bullet proof against theft. --47.155.xx.x

It would be cheap transportation, but you still need that small truck at a minimum. I have never seen anyone riding an E-Bike with a hot water tank strapped to it.

Maybe I am looking in the wrong places. --24.101.xxx.xxx

Ray-n-Pa; I still have my Tundra, not giving it up. Just trying to avoid driving only myself a few miles. Example; today I have to drop off a couple of new contracts ( I guess I could mail them, but that's no fun) It's sunny and going to be in the high 60's. --76.138.xxx.xxx

Phil,

I just read where bike batteries are catching fire while being charged in the house.

The writer puts his battery in a fire safe bag made for his battery when charging.

RayRay - I'm sure SOMEONE in India or Africa has transported a water heater on a bike! Searching the internet for a photo.
