So ideally I would be able to buy something like a Pod moving container and pay somebody to move that around correct? Something between a Pod moving container that you could buy but I kind of think a shipping container is not something I want to have long-term over one year in my yard whether it's legal or not something presentable and large that does not have a vehicle chassis.

Sorry for the long run ons I do voice chat thanks if you can help me out

Jason,

Not sure about your goal, but consider buying a large box trailer or two you can pull with a pickup. Minimal restrictions on zoning for parking and won't look too crazy in a driveway. sell it when done.

A shipping container needs big equipment to move.

Would PODs make you a deal on a year rental?

BRAD

Any reason not to simply rent a a storage facility? I rent out detached garages.

I am in need of additional storage myself. For personal as well as business reasons.

I found a shipping container for 8k with fresh paint, one end door and three side doors.

That is cheaper than a garage, especially since I am not planning to stay here forever. I am out in the county and I have a couple places I could tuck it in.

With that said I agree with Brad. If you are in town and worried about the container looking shabby a couple enclosed trailers would possibly suit you better. Problem with them is you have to worry about thieves more. I was hit a few years back. Lost the trailer and the contents.

Renting a U-store type place would probably be the best bet, unless what you want to store needs to be next to you at all times. --107.147.xx.xx

If you are in any kind of city/suburb there will be rules against parking anything that large on your property for more than maybe a few days. --172.58.xx.xxx

Yeah I might end up renting a storage unit but honestly I need a big one and I can't help it at my age I am just so anti-renting anything when I don't know how long I'm going to have it you know what I mean? If I had like a pod or a shipping container that was nice looking there are times even with my business when I'm renovating a house and I have a space in the yard I could drop it off I know other people do this and then you don't have to stress over a couple hundred dollar a month bill I'm going to be moving but I literally have absolutely no idea when but I am so ready to do this to clean out my big huge garage a lot of stuff that I don't use a lot but it's too valuable to throw away yada yada. I don't want to be one of those guys that rents a storage unit for a couple years and then dies for health reasons and everything goes to hell I want to clean up LOL --71.207.xx.xx

Buy 1 acre of land and put the largest Pole Barn possible,

with lean-to's on the sides.

Great investment for business and pleasure.

It will sell like a hotcake when the time comes.

Ask me how I know ! --69.130.xxx.xxx

I've had a shipping container for storage. It had fresh paint and honestly didn't look that bad because the paint was fresh and new and a sort of neutral tan color. It provides lots of storage, but they are not easy to move around. It's a big project and requires big equipment and the equipment that will fit into your yard to move them will not move them with contents, so the shipping container has to be emptied out before it is moved.

The plan was to move it when I moved, but the people who bought the house wanted to buy it from me, so it worked out easy. --76.178.xxx.xxx

A while back I was talking to a friend who had a few containers that he used for “whatever”.

He said one of the problems he had with the containers was they get HOT inside unless you install window AC units.

He therefor went from containers to refrigerator truck boxes and, being insulated, they didn’t build up the heat problem.

Something to consider.

Other than that, I like your idea.

Moving them, as others have said, might pose a dilemma. I have gone to the scrap yard and purchased a large truck that had burnt the cab but the back part was still in good shape. It made a great tilt bed hydraulic trailer.

You could not pull it with Volkswagen bug.

Any old mechanics around your area that might like a part time job building one for you.

I am plotting to pick up an acre or 2 at a tax sale...pour a slab with radiant tubes and put a steel building on it for a shop/storage/man-cave. Tough to work all the hobbies from a basement or garage. --198.168.xx.xxx

There comes a time when you have to question the value of what you are holding onto.

If I build a shed, garage, barn, or what have you, how much will my taxes go up for improvements? How much will repair and maintenance cost be? How much to get the approval and permits to build it?

If I buy a shipping container or pod, how much is that cost? Won't it also need maintained? Will it cause me a problem with the city? The neighbors?

What about insurance cost? Cost to move it around? Hassle to move it around?

At the end of the day, have I just increased the value of what I am holding onto, or have I in essence decreased it?

Would my mind be free if I just let it go?

How long should I hold onto something before it is too long?

Have I saved any money in the end or just spent more?

Now, I need to go clean out my garage!

Are these rentals you are working on or flips? I agree that is is sure nice to leave all the equipment and supplies onsite while you are working.

If they are rentals, consider buying the half-size containers, painting them nice, maybe put a trellis and vines growing up them for disguise, and leave them there permanently for the tenants to use as storage.

Or put a nice solid garden shed in the yard with a good solid lockable door.

Storage is at a premium for tenants and extra storage always helps to secure the better tenant for yourself. Have it in the lease that there is a couple hundred dollar clean out fee for the shed, plus the cost of dump fees if it is not left clean. --76.178.xxx.xxx

What county are you in?

I was planning on listing a piece of property I have with a realtor in about three more weeks.

I have a triple lot walking distance to the largest lake in the state (that isn't the great lake). It has a four car garage - so if you are in Western Pa, this might work out for you.

The place had a house on it and we torn that down. There is public sewer, a well already drilled and a new 200 Amp power panel and service going to the garage. we kept the foundation in place so people can either rebuild, put on a prefab or park there RV up there. We back filled the crawl space with sand so pouring concrete would be real easy ( after someone sets up the sewer and water connections in place. --24.101.xxx.xxx

No I'm not in Western PA I'm near Harrisburg. No I actually have a 24x24 pole building in my yard and I literally tried to subdivide my yard so I could keep the pole building but there's no way zoning will allow me to I will be selling this house I live in not renting it really what I'm trying to do is clean out my pole building but somebody said that if a storage container has to be empty will then that really screws that idea --71.207.xx.xx

If you have the money and the space you can move the container while full. A crane, or two good sized fork trucks and a flatbed with a tractor trailer.

I had the pole barn problem in one town. I have a vacant lot but you can't build a barn without a house. The workaround is put an efficiency apartment in the barn.

Then you can either rent it out or have a nice place for your stuff that shouldn't freeze.

I ended up not moving forward with the plan mostly due to the politics of the small town. Nothing to do with the barn idea. --107.147.xx.xx

PODS are ungodly expensive. My SIL rented several when she moved. Fees for drop off, storage, pickup, delivery, and final pick up.

I'd go with the big enclosed trailers. --69.80.xx.xx
