Anyone have any luck with painting a laminate counter top ? --73.101.xxx.xx

I had a client that was planning on doing an addition & major remodeling in a couple of years. In the meantime, she wanted to brighten up her kitchen for little or no money. I used some left-over blue boat paint & after a couple of coats it looked great. Thirty months later when we demoed her kitchen the painted counters still looked good. Before painting we thoroughly cleaned & wet sanded the old Formica. We used foam rollers & brushes to apply the paint. --96.233.xxx.xx

Same as Ken where I've gone to HD and used their product. Three days if you do it right (and the weather/humidity, etc is good).

I did it on our condo that we had purchased for our daughter... didn't want to use a lot of money at the time as we didn't really have much... came out pretty good for not really knowing what I was doing at the time. It lasted a few years for sure.

Depends on what kind of a tenant you will be placing for sure but it's cheaper (or was) than getting new counter tops at the time. --69.201.xx.xxx

I bought a property that had nonstandard countertop depths. My handyman painted them as a temporary measure. They're still there seven years later, no complaints from the tenant! --104.230.xxx.xxx

Personally, for durability, I would put a new layer of sheet laminate over the old torn one. As long as it's still adhered securely. --68.229.xxx.xxx

We have used a company that re-glazes bathtubs. Its an Exopy, not a paint and they used a respirtor and coverall when applying. Besides bathtubs we have had them do countertops, tile walls, and sinks. They also have contracts with apartment complexes and do the same for their tenant turnovers. We have used them for both rentals and flips, with good success. --173.67.xxx.xxx

David Krulac, how well does this hold up to tenants? I've been considering using that type of countertop refinishing in a few units. --136.22.xx.xx

It has held up well, we mostly used for flips, but did use for tenants. And this company does work for apartment complexes for tenant turnovers. --173.67.xxx.xxx

I used paint from DAICH from the Home Depot. It was a special order item. The first time I used it, it was awesome. The second time I ordered it (it is made in Canada), it was delivered to my house in January of 2022. It sat on my back porch for about six hours.

That second location, didn't turn out like the first job did. I am not sure if it was the cabinet or the paint. I am thinking it might be due to it sitting outside for as long as it did in 20 plus degree weather.

The paint is made in Ontario so it isn't really that far from me. I should really order some more in April or May or make a day of it and head up to great White North --24.101.xxx.xxx

Yes. My contractor had painted a countertop. Looked great. Got some bad tenants who used it as an art canvas. Couldn't remove all of the ink and paint, so I just painted over it again with countertop paint. Looked brand new. I think it's a good affordable option. --99.69.xxx.xx

I've used the rust oleum countertop paint. It works OK. When the tenant moves out, I just put on another coat for the next tenant. --96.233.xx.xx

The apartment I am about to start working on has the old gold fleck top. It is in good shape but obviously dated.

I am going to be updating the floors, paint and bathroom already. Kitchen is not in the works this time. Old cabinets but they are in great shape.

Considering painting the top just to see how it works out.

I do not want something that will start peeling or chipping in a year.

How tough is the paint? Pots and pans being dragged across it and things like that? --107.147.xx.xx

I can't comment on painting, but as for repair (6x6 mentioned this) I just watched a video on how to repair laminate counters. Although the repairs looked decent, IMO it's more trouble than it's worth unless you have a lot of counters and can't find a match and don't want to change them all. The repairs I saw required you to buy a complete palette of colors of powdered dyes and wax crayons and mix them to get the color or design you wanted, then heat them with a heat gun to apply, let them dry, and adjust color as needed. Way too much trouble for me and requires a bit of artistic talent. I'd say if you're looking for a cheap fix on a C property or lower, then fill any damage with wood filler, let it harden, and just roller paint the entire counter. If a nicer property, I'd replace the entire countertop...they cost less than $100 and the only hard part is cutting out the hole for the sink or if you have an "L" shaped piece you have to clamp together. I've replaced about 10 of them and I can do an 8' piece in about 2 hours start to finish. Consider a new faucet at the same time, as usually when you remove the old faucet something will show up as rusted or broken lol. --64.38.xxx.xxx

If you have a scratch to fix or a small gouge in laminate they make seam fill especially for that. Comes in little tubes. Squirt it out like toothpaste and have at it.

Won't hide it perfectly but will keep the eye from being drawn to it.

I used to run a laminate shop. This was years back. The tech might even be better now.

I have also noticed that new tops are not the same thickness as older ones. Especially if you have a built in backsplash.

Keep that in mind when preparing to replace. --107.147.xx.xx
