What do you all do for health insurance?

I left the 9-5 corporate world about 4 years ago to focus on my own home based business and my rental properties. When I left the corporate world, I also left a pretty good health insurance package behind. I am now buying my own health insurance through Medica. My new health insurance kinda sucks. I have it set up with a very high deductible to help keep the premiums down. Basically I am paying for my all of my doctors visits out of pocket and I have my health insurance to cover any unforeseen major medical issues. I am fortunate because I am a fairly healthy guy (knock on wood).

For those of you 100% self employed like me, what do you do for health insurance in this crazy world we live in?

We started out back in the day with a private policy that was about $400 a month total for both of us. Then healthcare became a .gov and our costs went up to $1200 plus very high deductible. I seem to remember we would have to spend $36k out of pocket before we got any coverage at all. But it was for catastrophic care so oh well. --173.28.xx.xxx

In NYS, they spent a boatload of "covid" money giving out "free health insurance" aka medicaid for people whose incomes would not otherwise qualify. It was crappy insurance in that very few doctors want to take medicaid anymore. The prescription drugs were free however.

Hubby and I are now completely off medications and are doing lifestyle changes instead.

Well that ended this year. I get "widower's SS at when I turned 62 so that almost pays for the monthly premium... almost" The deductible is sky high and never seems to "clock down" despite routine visits for dental cleaning, eye doctor, etc. which really isn't covered due to the high deductible. You're basically paying a high premium for hospitalization/major disaster. And Joke-hul wants to tax those premiums on top of everything!

I did manage to put a few bucks in an HSA when I saw this freight train coming down the road.

Thanks Obamacare! --64.246.xxx.xxx

I think you're doing the right thing by keeping a high deductible policy to minimize premiums and pay out of pocket for routine care. Staying healthy is probably your best bet. Eat a reasonable diet of quality food, exercise 4-6 times per week, don't smoke, and avoid excess alcohol.

A local walk in clinic visit here is about $50 and covers most routine checkup stuff (colds, allergies, stitches). Urgent care is $200 for the more serious events, but still covers most things even up to and including x-rays and broken bones if they just require a set and a sling. You might pay another couple hundred $ if it's something tricky. I've never seen a bill there go north of $1000. That's price range is full on hospital territory.

I can count on one finger the number of times in my life I needed urgent care. When I go to the hospital, I'm driving someone there or picking them up.

Cost share plans are out there too, but some like Christian Healthcare Ministries require a statement of faith. Their plans are relatively affordable ($100 - $250 per person per month), but unlike health insurance they have a per incident deductible, not just an annual deductible. Their lifetime cap is low compared to some plans, but you can purchase extended coverage for a nominal amount ($30/month or so).

Side-bar. I have kind of an unusual take on this... and please understand I'm not "judging" anyone here or telling anyone what they ought to do. This is my personal take only: If my healthcare is costing $100,000+ every year and there is NO FORSEEABLE END to that, then I will ask the good docs to discontinue care, give me a keg of beer and set me up on a nice porch somewhere in the mountains to finish out my time on this Earth. My goal isn't to live forever on some nutty cocktail of costly drugs, surgeries and medical hoopla. I'll be ready to go see the Lord.

We bought off the marketplace (obamacare) and it was reasonable, but it's been a couple of years ago as we now get Medicare. One thing I did do back then was make sure my high deductible insurance allowed for an HSA. Open with Fidelity so you can invest in the ANY stock, etf, etc. tho..not just some low paying savings plan or with limited choices for investments. If you can leave the money there for awhile. I keep all my receipts to pull it out tax free down the road. But yes, it has grown exponentially to what i put in. --64.184.xx.xx

Mine is through the NY marketplace. That system is a disaster but the provider I have is very good. I qualify for a rebate for a silver level plan, my net premium is 800ish a month. The annual deductible is $2500 which isn't hard to reach and then the copays are reasonable. --67.240.xx.xx

I also agree with Sid’s last paragraph. I had a skeptical distrust of the medical industry prior to the scamdemic, but now I don’t trust them at all. Beyond emergency room care, I’m not interested in any of their snake oil. I’ll cure through diet, exercise and natural stuff. If that doesn’t fix it, then I guess I’m buzzard bait. --174.249.xx.xxx

an older relative recently passed away. Was always proud of how fit he was, poo pood the Dr, wasn't having any of it. We'll he got I'll whole traveling and after 3 days of looking progressively worse another relative put their foot down and they went to the hospital. He'd had a heart attack, Main artery was kaput for long time and 2nd artery was clogged. Also had failing kidneys and copd. I'm sure if he had some regular checkups over the years his life would not have ended the way it did.clearly he was fronting it and ignoring problems. Dude, Two days in the hospital can easily cost $100,000+ for even simple stuff. The only way to be certain of a foreseeable end is if you or Dr. Kervorkian or your eager in-laws plan to cause it. Knew someone who was against all the medical hoopla, tubes, and stuff before he was hospitalized. Was predicted near death and doctors gave him all the medical hoopla. Came out of the hospital with an attitude changed to "Bring on tubes!" No one knows what their attitude will be until they are in it. --102.129.xxx.xxx

We have Christian Healthcare Ministries, which has covered kidney stones and broken bones. We go to a Minute Clinic for sinus infections, conjunctivitis, etc. That said, we're blessed to be purty darn healthy.

Where the medical industry gets you is when your health declines incrementally. First it's high blood pressure, so there's a pill for that. Then it's high cholesterol, another pill. Then osteoarthritis, glaucoma, etc. Next thing you know, you're taking ten different pills and having to see doctors for your conditions a couple times a week. Good luck with your plans! --104.230.xxx.xxx

Regular Medicare for me at age 77. Had to get it early as I was downsized in 1993 and my corporate insurance was ending. I got Horizon BC/BS. With ten buildings and 20 units total I could pay for it and then the GM factory closed and we lost beaucoup tenants who moved. Suddenly we are living on mom's SS and I can't pay for health insurance easily. So I got Medicare eventually at age 62 and used that money to pay for my health insurance. As finances improved I purchase a Medigap policy and paid around $700 per quarter to cover what Medicare does not. In 2014 they found uterine cancer after spirit warnings but no physical symptoms. Medigap paid for all that. I pay my own dental and for meds which are generic and the local supermarket, Shop Rite, is a benificent company that wants to keep their customers alive so they have a great pharmacist or two and cheap but very high quality generics. Now I have a return of cancer and am getting treated. It's pretty minor compared to others. There are a lot of mean doctors working as oncologists. No pain meds. Imagine that and I got burnt and none of them told me about silvidene. The plumber told me about silvadene. Watch those bills from drs. offices. I just had one shyster send me a duplicate bill I paid last month. This is the one who gave me the wrong med for klebsiella. --173.61.xxx.xxx

The big problem with all the right-to-die states is that none include help with Alzheimer's which is ridiculous...If you have ever watched anyone go that way and then are diagnosed yourself, you KNOW you want to go before your mind does...but to use the right-to-die options, you have to be in hospice (which means only 6 months left to live) and be able to state at least twice to two different doctors that you want to die. If you reach hospice stage with AZ you can no longer state intent.

Stating that intent while you still have a mind doesn't work. Doesn't matter how many people you tell or how many times you write it down.

The only place to go for help with AZ is Switzerland. --173.28.xx.xxx

Thank you, WMH.

Kind of defeats the concept of right to die. A person should not be forced to live but they are. Why should the government or anyone else be able to tell you that you can't put yourself to sleep? And, you can not tell any doctor that you want to die, or else you will regret it. You have to be very careful as to what you tell the doctors as they have to report it by law. The police will be at your door to take you to a psych ward. --76.129.xxx.xx
