My friend is an Arborist (tree expert, not a cult) and says trees are busy growing roots in winter when we amateurs think they are dormant.

In the Spring and Summer they grow ABOVE ground, and during winter they grow UNDER ground.

So they have been expanding their roots the last few months and NOW we see root clogs from all that winter growth.

Just had 3 in the last 4 days.

BRAD

My dad worked for the water and sewer plant in the small town I grew up in, and he always said the same thing. Calls about clogged sewer lines always peaked this time of year. --108.52.xxx.xxx

There are some trees that are worse than others. My neighbor has a Norway Maple, considered an invasive variety. It sprouts everywhere and I just had to bust out and dig up about 3 yards of earth to fix a hole in a sewer line. It was a good 75 yards to the tree so they don't have to be close. There was a hole in a cast iron drain line from a bathroom sink. The tree roots went through the hole, split about 10 feet of pipe down the side as it grew over the winter and made it to the main line following the water where it clogged up the hole house. The plumber thought the break was where the bath connected to the main, nope that was just where he could cut it back to, we had to bust up another 10 feet of concrete to follow the line up stream to the hole. --72.216.xx.xxx

Yikes. We do preventative maintenance at least once a year if not twice so only have backups if the ladies don't follow the lease and put feminine products in the toilet. I would rather pay that each year than all that trouble. If you have it done, I can't recommend rotor rooter around here anyway. You need more than the tiny tips that punch through a clog for preventative maintenance. Our plumber/sewer & drain guy has a sharp claw. Eats through anything.

So do the same trees that are causing your problems, causing it every year?

I've been using the foaming root killer on this house a couple of years after the plumber pulled out a wad of roots. I usually do that until the tenant moves out and then go in and fix the hole in the line the correct way. It's a pretty invasive process to do while someone is living there since you have to cut a hole in the floor, dig out a big pile of dirt, and then put it all back and repour the concrete and fix the finished floor. I guess you could use the root killer indefinitely putting it down the toilet a couple of times a year but I try and make my units as maintenance free as possible. --72.216.xx.xxx

I did something really stupid. I used my Spartan Model 1065 3/4" sewer auger with an expandable cutting blade and removed all of the roots (side to side and Top to bottom) of my sewer line, some 400 feet x 6 inches in diameter.

Then I sent down my color camera ans scoped every inch. Still some roots. Then I used my 20HP Jetter with my WortHog blaster, removing all dirt, roots and so on.

Then I sent down the line an expanding blatter/balloon. I stopped tenants water from entering the drain line and forced all sewer water to bypass the main sewer line-sending it into a neighbors clean out (with permission). Them I mixed up my batch of Root-X, and foamed the entire 400 foot sewer line, This killed all roots for 18 to 24 months. --47.155.xx.xxx
