I've heard about Google Voice but I'm not really sure how it works. My regular cell number has been my number since back when I had a land line, and a Google search of it brings up way too much information about me and my husband.

Is there a way to keep my current number and not port it through Google Voice but instead to add a new phone number through Google Voice (on the same phone) that I would only use for Craigslist and/or rental ads? It would be nice to have privacy without having to carry 2 cell phones for the limited times when I need it.

Instead of porting your current number through GV, your GV number ports to the device that your current number rings. So you have two different numbers ringing one device.

Robots are particularly bad at using GV. After having my main cellphone # get sold to spammers too many times (which seems to frequently happen when I use it to book a hotel), I've now started giving out my GV number to people who aren't friends & family, in addition to using it for biz purposes. --96.46.xxx.xx

When you setup the google voice you are given the choice of a new number or porting an existing number. The new number can be one of your choice if available. Then you can have the calls to this number forwarded to another number (in this case your existing cell phone). --68.60.xxx.xx

Yes. That's exactly the situation it is for. Moby gave a good , simple explanation. When you get the google #, you can make and receive calls and texts, with your caller ID showing the gv# to the other person, instead of your real #. And you can see it is coming from gv#, so you know it is someone responding to your ad.

I recently started using it. Ran into one problem when trying to make an outbound call away from wifi. Apparently, it works on wifi - which is fine when I'm making calls from my home office.

Perhaps someone here will advise on how to make it work without wifi? That would be much more useful --68.10.xxx.x

Google Hangouts app allows further flexibility when using GV numbers. You will need to also get the separate Google Hangouts Dialer app and then you can make calls using any GV number by selecting that google account.

Trying to switch between GV numbers with the regular dialer and google voice is a bit bulky and google hangouts is a good solution --50.4.xxx.x

I haven't had trouble using GV without wifi, I do use the GV app that may make a difference. Like David said you have to make sure you use the correct dialer (GV or your phones default dialer) depending on who you are communicating with. Your contacts are shared between both dialers. I love GV and they recently improved the PC interface. --68.60.xxx.xx
