I have a sump pump that makes a gurgling sound for about 2 seconds after it ejects the water. I had a plumber tell me it is normal. Can anyone confirm that?

Yes, because sump pumps do not have a air intake on top of the discharge hose the way your home’s plumbing system does. Try capping off your drain waste vent stack, and listen to the gurgle! ( no don’t.) At least, that is my understanding. I could be wrong.... --70.92.xxx.xxx

You should also notice some water running back in from the pump. If the pump discharge hose is above the pump, all the water it's pumping through the hose is uphill. It has to pump it so far before it either reaches the end of the hose or starts it's downhill slope. The gurgling you hear is all the uphill water falling back down the pipe. It's probably more gurgly without a vent, but even with a vent, the water would still return to the hole being pumped from once the pump was off. If you want to get rid of the noise, place a one way valve on the pump (flow towards hose) and connect the output hose to that. That way, once the pump stops, the valve shuts and no water falls down the uphill slope of the output hose. --108.69.xxx.xxx

Is there a foot valve above the sump pump? That would keep the water from traveling back down into the hole which may be the gurgling you are hearing

Absolutely normal, it’s the water draining back into the pump from the hose. Sump pumps lift the water up and push it up and out your hose, when the pump shuts off some of that water flows back threw the pump...... glug glug glug!! --71.248.xxx.xxx
