I'm adding a new requirement to my screening of potential tenants and workers. Must have a current in state drivers license.

Reasoning is virtually everyone between 16 and 80 has one. If they dont, at least around here, there's a reason. Drunk driving, driving without insurance, failure to pay court ordered money (child support, fines, judgements) that kind of thing. These type things indicate the type of people that simply don't pay the rent from my experience.

Of course, there are exceptions (blind, subject to seisures, live in New York City), and a few more, so each will be evaluated.

I've just found that about 99 percent without a license turn out to be trouble and wind up being evicted. --23.121.xx.xxx

Good idea. I once new a LL who got fined by housing cause the applicant was questioned about not having a Driver's license. What she said was "why dont you rent somewhere by tge bus route " since she was white and applicant was black it was considered discrimination. So dont ask them about transportation and if asked you dont know any options for them. --99.203.xx.xxx

I like your thinking, but unfortunately this statement is not true: "Reasoning is virtually everyone between 16 and 80 has one."

20 years ago, that would have been a true statement. Double check that it doesn't run up against state non-discrimination laws. I think it's still legal to insist on some form of Govt-issued ID, if that's what your intention is. I'd deny based on the other criteria you listed that often accompanies those without a DL since those are not protected....yet.

You can request a state issued ID, but I would not require a DL. Too many of today's young people don't bother.

I had a student who graduated and got a job. Moved from my small town to STL. He didn't have a DL when he graduated. I saw him last week. Asked if he had a DL yet. NOPE!

I asked how he was getting to and from work. Uber and Lyft. He looked into getting a DL and car. He decided it didn't save him any money. The car would be over $5000 to get something he felt comfortable in. Insurance would be $200 per month (under 25 male with no driving history). He decided it wasn't that important for now. --131.151.xx.xx

Uber and Lyft may be living on borrowed time and overly eager investor speculation, but for now they're a pretty good deal. I don't know a lot about Lyft, but I believe Uber requires the driver to have a 4 year old or younger car. A buddy and I took a rid from the airport to the Convention Hotel a couple years ago in Cleveland... about 15 minutes one way. Cost was $10, plus gave him a $10 tip.

When two people can go somewhere for $20, that's pretty sweet. No gasoline, no insurance, no repairs, no property taxes, and in a nice new car that has updated safety features. If you work the standard J.O.B. that requires a daily round trip and pay about $30/day including tip. 21 work days per month = $630. That is only slightly more expensive than most car payments for a new vehicle, and when you also subtract out the expenses listed above and consider you have TIME to do things like read, make calls, etc. that you shouldn't be doing while driving it makes sense for the rider.

Not so profitable for the driver, though. I've read many sites that say after all expenses considered, drivers are profiting between $9-$20/hour even with tips, except during peak shifts and/or perpetually "hot" markets. Add to that when a party of drunks throw up in your car.... --173.20.xxx.xxx

I explain to my applicants that for $36 they could obtain a State ID card from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Instead of doing the leg work, the applicant reports me for discrimination. Our tax dollars at work. --47.156.xx.xx

Gotta agree with the others here. A vacancy last fall returned 22 completed applications. 11 provided color copies of state issued ID, 8 gave copies of their Drivers License. 3 gave no ID, and were immediately rejected. I ended up renting to a guy without a DL, but otherwise a good applicant. --107.141.xx.xxx

I like where you are going, but as you say there are certainly exceptions that explain why some don't.

Maybe the better question is: if you don't currently have a drivers license have you had one in the past? --50.26.xx.xxx

a drivers license can be the real deal, but it could have been revoked or suspended. You wouldn't know it unless you checked your state's DMV or SOS databases.

So if you're concerned about DUI etc, that can be determined from court searches which a LL should be doing anyways --50.4.xxx.x
