I just returned from Florida, where I saw a lot of beautiful potted temporary plantings being effectively utilized in front of homes for sale. This caused me to wonder how this kind of portable landscaping might work up here in cold New England . Would love to hear from others who have used this type of "temporary" landscaping to advantage....

Small flowers, not large topiaries, but containers of colorful pansies will be at garden centers very shortly. Don’t be fooled by the name pansy. Those little babies are tough. They will bloom their faces off, even under fresh snow. Bright yellow are very eye catching. Also available in purple, white, and occasionally sky blue or pink. --70.92.xxx.xxx

Consider that here in Los Angeles anything that's not nailed down, from Beverly Hills to Boyle Heights, may be taken. And shallow planted scrubs can be stolen also. Sad but a fact of life. --47.156.xx.xx

I've got that in my lease these days: no planting in ground. Everything in removeable pots. Planting in ground is considered damage. --50.82.xxx.xx

For a house that is for sale, not a bad idea to get instant curb appeal.

For something every year, as long as it is annuals -pansies early, petunias later, mums in the fall, it is fine. Keep in mind they will probably need to be watered more often than those that are in the ground. (more work)

There are not very many pots you can leave the soil in over the winter and leave them outside. Frozen wet soil expands and cracks pots, plastic does not hold up with weather changes and sun. So you need to move them to a storage place over the winter. (more work) Shrubs will be more exposed to freeze / thaw cycles during the fall and spring that are not good for the plant.

I suppose its a great idea. Use a dolly to move them from inside to outside. Mostly there are tricks to filling the pots with packing peanuts or such to avoid weight and cost of soil to fill. I like the idea! Agree it looks nice too. How were you thinking this would help with rentals? --99.203.xx.xxx

Did you actually touch any of the large potted plants/ shrubs/trees? I would bet that a lot of them are artificial. There are some beautiful ones out there that are hard to tell they are artificial. I have several. To avoid theft the pots ( also expensive) are filled with concrete. Many already come weighted for the same reason. --71.10.xxx.xxx

It might be worth it if you are selling a house with no curb appeal.

For a rental, I wouldn't bother. If you leave potted plants at a rental, the tenants will kill them double quick. Potted plants require daily care, which they won't get unless the landlord goes over daily, or else pays someone to go over daily, and check their water.

(I do potted tomatoes at my house, that I can move indoors when there is frost, but I sure wouldn't do potted tomatoes at a rental or house for sale) --98.146.xxx.xxx

If someone buys the house with the big pots of trees and plants and you consider that "temporary staging" and take them away, you would be in big trouble with me if I was the buyer. As a garden club member and plant enthusiast, I can tell you that many small bushes will not survive a cold winter with their roots in a pot. The roots need to be way underground to survive a cold winter. That's why it works in Florida. It never gets cold to freeze the roots in the pot, or at least not long enough to kill them. --173.61.xxx.xx

Just be sure on MLS and contract to specify that the potted plants are not included. That way no hard feelings when you remove the landscaping. --108.69.xxx.xxx

I have successfully used a variety of such plantings in HEAVY concrete urns and pots etc. for the past several years to liven up some of the drab landscaping in front of houses and yards in our class B marketing region

While the plantings themselves have ended up being stolen on occasion,I have yet to lose any of the very HEAVY containers......

We did something like this for a wedding party held in our backyard. I bought a bunch of beautiful asters and hydrangea plants and put them, pot and all, in larger decorative containers, added a bit of mulch to cover the inner container. After the wedding, planted them in the ground at the rentals.

Even if you end up leaving any containers behind for the buyers, curb appeal really makes a difference. Worth it, if you don’t have to invest too very much. --70.92.xxx.xxx
